With a mere 30 minute transfer from Innsbruck airport, Axamer Lizum is one of the Alps' most accessible resorts and also lays claim to having hosted the 1976 Winter Olympics.

The base is located at a snowsure altitude of 1580m, with slopes stretching up to over 2300m
This provides reliable ski conditions throughout the winter, especially now many of the runs are supplemented by snow machines. Most of the terrain suits intermediates, with wide open blues and reds dominating the piste map, but there are some steeper sections on the Olympic Downhill course used back in 1976.For more advanced skiers, the black off the Birgitzköfel is a real challenge and there are some great off piste routes on offer, particularly if you’re prepared to hike a little or strap on a pair of skins.
In terms of accommodation, there is the Hotel Olympia at the foot of the slopes and the historic funicular railway, but options are limited and the best place to stay is down in the village of Axams or in Innsbruck itself. This makes it a great resort to visit on a day trip, combining your trip with skiing at the likes of Kühtai, Fulpmes or Seefeld.

Austria will see the best snowfall of many regions in Europe, with steady flurries expected all week. The week remains cool-to-cold for many areas, with highs of -3°C expected at 1,300m in the midday sun as the freezing line remains low.
A large, dense low pressure area will move over central Europe as the week continues, bringing with it plenty of precipitation and (eventually) cold weather. To begin with – over Thursday and Friday – this will fall as snow only at higher elevation with the potential for rain at points below the freezing line, c.2,000m. These higher slopes will still see a good foot or so falling throughout Thursday evening and Friday.
The freezing line drops again into Saturday, bringing snow to all slopes, meaning a further 40cm could well be expected across a lot of ground on Saturday evening and into Sunday, and, looking ahead, could well continue into Monday and the new week.
