The valley features two main bases, Lenzerheide and Valbella on the opposite side of Heidsee Lake, with chalets and small family-run hotels scattered throughout.

To the west lies the main area of local slopes, a network of blues and reds linked by fast lifts, and to the east lies steeper slopes – including the World Cup Downhill run – and crucially the link up and over to Arosa. All of the major lifts in the valley are linked by a regular, free bus service which makes getting around easy. The best way to experience this fantastic resort is with Ski Club Freshtracks this winter, on one of our two Luxury Lenzerheide trips.

On the Slopes

There are several beginner areas in the Lenzerheide valley, but best of all is the Kinderland Auarara, a quick hop on the bus from the centre of town. From here there is some good progression on to longer blues at Tgantieni and above Parpan further along the valley. Intermediates will love the cruisey terrain to the west of the village, but will also want to explore the full linked area with Arosa – just watch out for the steeper pitches at Urdenfürggli on the way home.

Advanced and expert riders will find some good steep runs off the Stätzerhorn lift above Parpan, but will otherwise want to stick to the east side of the valley. Here there is some very good off piste after fresh snowfall, as well as the World Cup Downhill run. The off piste below the Weisshorn in Arosa and off the newly revamped six-seater Brüggerhorn lift is also well worth exploring.

In the Resort

Accommodation is mostly in smart, family run hotels and most are connected to the lift network by the efficient bus service. Restaurants tend to be hotel- focused, but there is lots of good Swiss fare on offer. On the après ski front, things tend to be quiet, but the Freeridebar at the foot of the racetrack can get lively at times.

This is a great place for a family holiday or for a group with non-skiers. There is a vast network of winter walking trails, particularly on the west side of the valley and by the lake, and the resort is home to some great tobogganing routes. In addition there is ice skating and curling, whilst the sports centre is reportedly excellent.

Getting to Lenzerheide

Zürich is a quick hour and a half drive away. Alternatively you can catch the train to Chur and jump on a bus up to the resort. Friedrichshafen airport in Germany is a good alternative and the drive is a similar length. Basel airport is around two and half hours away.

Another varied week ahead for Switzerland, with a mix of conditions fighting it out across the period and the region.

A mixed middle of the week will bring sun and cloud across all areas, with a high freezing line bringing positive temperatures at 2,000m. This will change as Wednesday ends and Thursday begins, with a dense low pressure area moving over Ireland, the UK and Northern Europe bringing snow to the country. This will start on higher ground only, but as the freezing line falls on Thursday evening it will bring snow with it to all elevations; around 10cm can be expected in the west and southwest, but areas further east will see the best of this snow with 30cm expected across Thursday and Friday. Temperatures will plummet to -10°C at 2,000m at this time.

Westerly reaches will see a spot of fine, dry and bright conditions to being the weekend, with things staying cool. Further east, unsettled conditions will continue, with cloud and a few floccons of snow coming across Friday and into Saturday, when more proper snowfall beings again; another foot is expected down in these regions on Sunday, although this will be more limited to higher ground as the freezing line rises from below sea level to close to 2,000m at this time. These more unsettled conditions are expected to continue into the new Christmas week, including in the west where the snowfall will be limited to a couple of centimetres.
