Forecast today: Mainly fair
The ski areas is dominated by Bald Mountain, offering everything a skier could offer. And whilst Sun Valley can seem isolated compared to other North American ski areas, easy access via Hailey airport, a complete ski town in Ketchum, and the special environment of the Wood River Valley create a must-visit North American ski destination.
Most of the skiing is found on Bald Mountain, which offers two mountain faces; one running down to Ketchum and the River Run Lodge, the other heading down towards the neighbouring town of Warm Springs. The beginner areas are found by River Run Plaza, with a beginner’s magic carpet and the resort’s learning zone running from the top of the Lookout Express lift and winding all the way down to resort base.
Otherwise, trail length for absolute beginners is limited. For those progressing, however, there is plenty to enjoy. The Warm Springs side of the Lookout gives you everything you could want – greens, blues and blacks – all of it below the tree line offering plenty for everyone to enjoy. Warm Springs is served by two fast four- and six-packs, delivering skiers to the Lookout Restaurant quickly and easily.
Over on the Ketchum side of Bald Mountain, the terrain opens out, with the treeless Lookout/Mayday bowl delivering the resort’s only skiing above the treeline and, at the same time as you head over to Seattle Ridge, the resort’s serious skiing comes into play through a huge gladed area. Here you will find the gnarliest skiing in the resort, a series of double black diamonds working their way through the trees.
Dollar Mountain sits across town from Bald Mountain above the main Sun Valley lodge & resort, and offers a much smaller skiing experience with a limited 300m vertical drop, but is perfect for beginners to get their ski legs under them.
Sun Valley will host the final round of the 2024/25 FIS Alpine World Cup, with both men and women competing across all four disciplines. The course will run down the Warm Springs side of Bald Mountain, taking in International, Mid Warm Springs, and swapping back and forth between Hemingway, Cozy and Greyhawk to finish at the foot of Warm Springs. Events will take place on the week 20-27 March 2025.
The slopes of Sun Valley lies as part of the Idaho town of Ketchum and extends over to the neighbouring town of Warm Springs. Together, they sit in the Wood River Valley in the dramatic and scenic Sawtooth mountains.
Ketchum itself is compact but offers everything, an “all-in-one” ski town at the foot of the slopes. The focus of the resort – shops, après and restaurants – can all be found surrounding the River Run lodge at the foot of the Ketchum side of Bald Mountain, but the town footprint offers plenty of alternative accommodation options along the way.
The Sun Valley Lodge and resort is located at the foot of Dollar Mountain, slightly out of town away from the main slopes of Bald Mountain, however offers a huge variety of hotel accommodation, condos and forest lodges, swimming pools and spa facilities, and restaurants. The town’s efficient shuttle bus services links the lodge to the foot of the slopes quickly and easily.
Sun Valley will host the final round of the 2024/25 FIS Alpine World Cup over the week 20-27 March 2025

Updated 11/02
Another excellent low pressure system will make its way over the Left Coast over the course of the backend of this week, bringing several feet of snow to some parts. This will create another insider slider system, delivering goods to the Sierras from Friday morning onwards – up to a foot-and-a-half will fall over Friday and Saturday.
This system – pushing in from the Pacific off San Francisco – will keep moving inland, hitting Utah and Colorado – delivering one of Colorado’s first big dumps of the season so far. This could see two feet of snowfall over this weekend.
Mild conditions will follow this system as the weekend concludes, especially over the Sierras.
Out East, an unsettled week will continue with temperatures swinging drastically between bitterly cold and mild. Accompanying this will be bursts of snowfall, with around 15cm down overnight Wednesday into Thursday, and a further 25cm down over the weekend.
