Forecast today: Broken clouds
Three fast quads serve the majority of the terrain, making it easy to lap the 3000ft of vertical on offer. Most of the terrain suits intermediates best, but there is some good hike-to terrain for more advanced and expert skiers, as well as some good gentle greens at the foot of the hill. Oh, and you’ll very rarely find a lift queue – the slopes are often pretty much deserted! On the hill there is little more than a daylodge and no accommodation, so you’ll need to stay down in Jasper. This isn’t a bad thing however as the bus ride/drive is quick and easy and the town has a friendly feel about it, as well as a very good range of accommodation, restaurants and watering holes. Please note that Jasper suffered considerable damage during July 2024 wildfires – it remains unknown as to whether the town will recover in time for winter 2024/25.
Marmot Basin has changed a lot over the years with the addition of new high speed quad chairlifts, the opening of new terrain, installation of a snowmaking system and countless renovations to facilities. Marmot Basin has evolved into a world-class ski area that has managed to maintain its authentic and unspoiled atmosphere within Canada’s largest Rocky Mountain national park.
The current Knob Chair has whisked skiers to the resort’s our highest terrain since 1977 and the 2022-23 season was it’s last. Rising even higher will be a new Knob Chair. This new fixed grip quad chair with conveyor loading can carry 1,200 people per hour. The top terminal elevation will stand at 2,518 metres (8,261 feet), taking guests higher than ever before. The new chair will give guests lift access to more of the mountain, including our newly opened terrain, The Cirque.
A decade in the making, The Cirque was officially opened in March 2023. This vast and impressive new terrain is above the treeline, with bowls and chutes the were never accessible to the public. The views are magnificent and the skiing and snowboarding offers some of the best expert, high alpine terrain in the Canadian Rockies. This new area provides astounding skiing and snowboarding for those with a thirst for off-piste, adrenaline-fueled skiing and riding. To reach the highest alpine terrain requires a hike for expert skiers and snowboarders, but others can also traverse the lower portions of The Cirque by exiting the Knob Chair to skiers right. The Cirque provides an additional 25 hectares (62 acres) of skiable terrain just below the ridgeline between the Knob and Eagle Ridge Chairs.
Seriously good skiers should head over to Tres Hombres. The north-facing treeless slope, some 18 hectares (44 acres) in size, provides incredible advanced and expert off piste skiing and snowboarding terrain which has long been coveted by locals and visitors alike. With powder-filled bowls and chutes that descend 367 vertical metres (1,204 feet), this is Marmot Basin’s longest uninterrupted fall line.
Marmot Basin has been ranked the “most affordable ski resort in North America” by HomeToGo. The 2020 Ski Index compares prices of lift tickets, rentals, lunch and accommodation at the top resorts across the continent. Marmot Basin placed first in that year’s ranking beating out many of the top ski resorts in Canada and the USA.
Located at mid-mountain, the Marmot Learning Centre is an interactive ski-in, ski-out classroom offering on mountain educational sessions to school groups through a unique partnership between Marmot Basin, Parks Canada and Grande Yellowhead Public School Division. The curriculum approved lesson topics include avalanche awareness, sharing the mountain landscape with wildlife, potential emergency situations during winter travel and the benefits of spending time in nature!
Jasper is a stop on VIA Rail’s The Canadian transcontinental service between Toronto and Vancouver. Heading West, the service departs from Toronto on Monday and Thursday mornings, and Edmonton on Tuesday and Friday evenings; it arrives at Jasper on Wednesday and Saturday mornings respectively, with a timetabled journey time of around 7hrs from Edmonton or c.48hrs from Toronto. Timetabled coach connections to and from Calgary meet the train at Edmonton. Heading East, The Canadian leaves Vancouver early evening on Mondays and Fridays, arriving around midday the next day. As with other long distance routes, the service can be subject to long delays, so don’t rely on it to meet flights or other connections, but it remains one of the greatest railway journeys in the world, especially between Jasper and Vancouver – well worth the experience for anyone with time to spare.
Marmot Basin is not the easiest resort to access, lying a good 3 1/2 – 4 1/2 hour drive into the Rockies from Edmonton or Calgary. However, the nearby town of Jasper provides a wonderful base in the heart of the stunning Jasper National Park. The journey into the mountains is also one of the most spectacular you will find, making it well worth the journey.
