Vallorcine is a great beginner and intermediate ski area with all but one of its runs being graded either blue or red.
Beginners can learn the ropes in the beginners areas at either Le Poya (a ski area on the other side of the valley), to which you will have to catch a train, or Le Tour, to which you will have to catch a train to Montroc followed by a bus to Le Tour itself.
Intermediates can catch the gondola up to the main ski area and then ski or snowboard a series of blues and reds to Le Tour. Less confident intermediates may wish to catch the gondola down the final part of the descent to Le Tour rather than ski the red Les Caisets run. There is little on offer for advanced skiers and therefore advanced skiers should purchase a Mont Blanc regional pass which provides access to 10 ski areas. Chamonix, one of the areas included in the pass, can now be accessed by a gondola that takes you directly from the village to the Balme area.
Vallorcine is a beautiful traditional village. It is excellent for families due to the skiing on offer and the self-catered apartments which have a kids club and indoor swimming pool. If you fancy a drink after a hard day on the slopes there are a few bars to choose from which are usually fairly quiet. Getting to Vallorcine is easy – Geneva airport is only one hour away by car or alternatively Chambéry is a two hour drive away.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Vallorcine – as part of the wider Chamonix Valley resort area – has been awarded two snowflakes out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability; only a quarter of Flocon Vert recipients have been awarded two snowflakes – no area has been awarded three.
- Vallorcine and Chamonix was accredited in 2013 and renewed in 2017
- Special focus was paid to educational measures taken by the resort
- The reduction in emissions and transition plan away from fossil fuels has been particularly praised by the Flocon Vert scheme

Snow returns to the Alps again from Tuesday afternoon, as up to 30cm falls overnight Tuesday and throughout Wednesday in the Southern and Eastern French Alps. This is aided by a freezing line topping out at 2,000m, falling off to 1,500m overnight, allowing this snow to reach all elevations. Resorts in the far northwest of the region, closest to Geneva, will miss out on this snow as it tracks in from the East, over the Italian Alps.
After a cold Wednesday evening, high pressure and spring conditions return, with a serious swing between overnight lows and midday highs. The freezing line will settled at 1,000m overnight, before climbing to over 2,500m in the midday sun. This amplitude will close as the weekend approaches, with the overnight freezing line tucking in just below 2,000m.
These fine, dry and bright conditions will continue well into the weekend and beyond.
