Sestriere was Italy’s first purpose built resort and is thus incredibly convenient. It is very much ski in ski out and the revamp completed for the 2006 Winter Olympics only improved it further. Sestriere may not be the prettiest resort, but the convenience, allied with affordable prices make this a great base for your ski holiday.
The local slopes are home to an excellent beginner zone at the edge of the village, from which there is good progression on to longer blues. Intermediates will really enjoy the longer reds at Nuevo Nube and also those across the valley from the Fraiteve gondola down to Sansicario. There are also some much steeper challenges off the Banchetta and Cit Roc chairlifts – but note that the black ratings here are perhaps a little flattering.
The rest of the Milky Way is mostly suited to intermediate skiers, who have an almost limitless choice of terrain across the 400km linked area – which includes Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario, Claviere, Cesana Torinese and Montgenèvre.
The purpose built resort is very convenient and much of the accommodation is located right next to the slopes or at the most a very short walk away from the lifts. A number of good value hotels can be found in the town, whilst the former Olympic Village provides affordable self-catered accommodation, right at the foot of the slopes.
There are some decent restaurants and a couple of bars to explore in the evenings, but generally the après ski and evening scene is pretty chilled here – if you’re looking for more of a buzz and a better nightlife scene then head to Sauze d’Oulx.
Sestriere is well connected to nearby Turin, with a brand new motorway installed along the length of the Val de Susa in time for the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics, which saw some events staged in Via Lattea. As a result, transfer times can be as little as 40 minutes from Turin Airport. Regular train services run from Turin & Turin Airport along the valley, stopping at Oulx – from here, regular buses and, from March 2024, the dedicated Via Lattea Link service, will transport you from the valley floor to the resort.
Via Lattea has offered discounts on lift passes in previous years for arriving in the resort by train, although this promotion has not been confirmed as running for the 2024/25 – keep an eye on the Via Lattea website for more details. Since late 2023, the railway line between Italy and France via Modane and Grenoble has been shut owing to a landslide near Modane. As a result, international TGV and Frecchiarossa services have been unable to serve the Via Lattea, and will continue to do so until “at least early 2025”. It is recommend to plan your travel carefully to avoid this disruption.
Dates for the 2024/25 season are still to be confirmed by the resort
Lift pass prices for the 2024/25 winter season are still to be confirmed by the resort – the below table is therefore indicative only.

A decidedly mixed week is in store across Italy through the end of this week and through the weekend. Things will start mild across the region, with positive temperatures expected at 2,000m. High pressure will bring fine, dry and bright conditions to southwesterley reaches, whilst other areas will retain a mix of cloud and sun.
A large, dense area of low pressure will move in over Ireland, the UK and Northern Europe, bringing snow to many areas on Thursday. Snow will fall from Thursday morning onwards, initially across higher ground but reaching lower slopes as the freezing line plummets; -10°C can be expect across the Italian Alps on Friday.
The best snowfall will fall across higher ground such as the Aosta Valley, with about 15cm down over Thursday and into Friday. Elsewhere, higher slopes of Piemonte and the Dolomites will see a few useful centimetres to keep things fresh. High pressure returns across the region on Saturday, with fine, dry and bright conditions dominating – temperatures will gradually lift as the freezing line climbs over the course of the weekend. Sunday will once again bring more cloud, a possible harbinger of more unsettled and snowy conditions moving in for Christmas week.
