  • Engelberg may not have the extensive slope mileage of some larger resorts, but what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality.

The lift-served off piste potential is vast, especially with the world renowned Laub freeride route, and its position right on the northern edge of the Alps means it frequently gets hammered during snowstorms. And, although the biggest attraction is the off piste, the snowsure pistes also serve up some great terrain for beginner or intermediate skiers. The resort is more of a small town and, as a result there, is good variety when it comes to accommodation. Its grand Victorian hotels have been joined by chalet-style buildings, concrete blocks and new apartment buildings right next to the gondola.

By far the best way to make the most of Engelberg’s incredible terrain is with Ski Club Freshtracks. There are seven off piste holidays heading out to the resort this winter, between January and March.

Thanks to modern facilities, fast transport times, and expert instructors, an off piste adventure in Engelberg will make every minute count!

    Pros and cons

    • Fantastic snow record
    • Epic off piste runs
    • Huge vertical and long runs
      • Most slopes above trees so skiers may feel exposed in bad weather
      • Limited pistes for intermediates
      • Accommodation mostly a bus ride from the main lifts

      Hotel Terrace

You’ll be staying at the 3* Hotel Terrace which is situated on a large hill overlooking the village. You’ll be catered for on a half board basis, with some wine included with dinner. The hotel is easily accessible from the main square by a lift, so no trudging up hills in your ski boots! This trip includes a 6-day standard adult lift pass which will be given out at the hotel in the morning of your first ski day. This holiday is on a single occupancy basis. You will therefore be placed in a room on your own for the duration of the trip. If you would prefer to share a room with someone you know, then please contact the Freshtracks office and we will make the relevant arrangements.

      Travel Information

This holiday includes a standard class return Swiss Rail ticket between Zurich airport and Engelberg. An efficient and convenient way to travel in Switzerland, travelling by rail allows you to set your own schedule and choose the flights best suited to you. We recommended the Swiss Rail website for finding the most accurate journey times. Please do not book your flights until the holiday has been confirmed to run.

Should you not be flying into Zurich airport, please call the office to discuss alternative arrangements on 020 8410 2022. You will be sent your ticket via email a few days before departure. This ticket does not need to be printed off, and can be used at any time on the day of travel.

      Confirmation

Once the holiday has been confirmed, please send your flight details (flight numbers, arrival and departure time) to the Freshtracks Team via email to ku.oc.bulciks@sloh.

If you require equipment hire then previous Ski Club Reps have recommended the ONLY ski hire shop. This is conveniently located near the hotel and offers both a high standard of on and off piste equipment and a discount to Ski Club members.

If you own your own ski touring equipment, then it may be worth taking this with you on your trip. If you do not own your own kit, then this can normally be easily rented in resort. However, please be aware of the cost of hiring this equipment in resort.

Lift passes are included in the cost of this holiday, so there is nothing you are required to do ahead of departure. Your Ski Club rep will have your lift pass ready for you in resort!

It is a condition of booking that you have valid and adequate snowsports insurance. It is your responsibility to ensure your policy provides cover for all the activities that you participate in during your holiday.

We offer a Ski Club Insurance policy which provides the cover we require for all bookings. This policy can be found here: Ski Club Travel Insurance – Ski Club Of Great Britain

If you decide to purchase insurance elsewhere, it is your responsibility to ensure that your policy provides cover as that of the Ski Club Insurance policy. The policy of insurance should provide cover for personal injury, death, medical and repatriation costs in the countries which you intend to visit, together with cover for loss of baggage and valuables, personal liability, delay, cancellation, curtailment, missed departure and legal expenses. The policy should also include cover against losses caused by the effects or consequences of Covid-19.

Due to the type of holidays that you will be booking with us, we also advise that your policy should include skiing off-piste without a guide. Please note, insurance premiums must be paid at the same time as booking in order for the package holiday or single service cancellation cover to be effective. It is also advised to keep your insurance details with you while you are on your holiday. If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, we will not be liable for any losses howsoever arising, in respect of which insurance cover would otherwise have been available.

Passport – Check your passport is in date and valid for travel by checking the entry requirements for your destination country – you can see these here: Foreign travel advice – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

For most European destinations your passport should:

      • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check your passport meets these requirements before you travel.

NB: Starting in 2025 (Date TBC) travel authorisation will be required to travel withing Europe – find out more here ETIAS (europa.eu)

When venturing off piste, it is compulsory to wear an avalanche transceiver. These can be provided by the Ski Club and should be worn by every person on every all mountain, off piste and touring holiday. Anyone joining these holidays will also be required to bring their own backpack, shovel and probe.

      Rep Review – February 2024

      Peter Knight, July 2, 2024

A great trip to start exploring the infinite terrain and challenges of off piste skiing that can be found just the other side of the piste markers before progressing quickly into some of the more technical terrain that Engelberg offers in abundance. The local instructors from Prime Ski School’s enthusiasm and local knowledge kept the group challenged whilst having great fun exploring the impressive Titlis mountain and its glacier and the Jochpass ski areas. When conditions allow the Brunni ski area provides different challenges including some tree skiing. Our instructors Thomas and Florian took account of the group’s different ski levels and fitness and a great time was had by all.

Engelberg is a well laid out town that offers a bit more than just as a ski resort and is centred around the train station, historic monastery and tradition of cheese making. The flat bottom to the valley results in generally level streets and pleasant walking even in ski boots although regular free shuttle buses will take you from your hotel to the ski lifts and back again in just a few minutes. After a day’s skiing Chalet, Yucatan and Ski Lodge bars among others offer après ski at various levels between chilled and the slightly more raucous.

Hotel Terrace is an imposing building built in the Belle Epoque style above the town and provides a comfortable base for the week. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the town centre and is reached on foot by private elevators and tunnels. Many of the public area and rooms provide great views of the surrounding mountains and town below. The buffet breakfast and dinner are served at a group table so all the members can get to know each other quickly and swap stories of the day’s endeavours. Before or after dinner the Portico Bar is a great place for an aperitif or nightcap and serves more a thousand different types on gin! If a day of off piste skiing isn’t enough fun then Hotel Terrace also provides free ballroom dancing lessons in its impressive ballroom.
