Black Diamond was born from the legendary Chouinard Equipment and was a natural continuation of the passion and ethos that Yvon Chouinard and his friends started in 1965. Peter Metcalf and the employees of Chouinard Equipment took over in 1989, changed the name to Black Diamond and moved to Salt Lake City, to be at the base of the Wasatch mountains. In September 1996, a European office was installed in Basel, Switzerland – bringing the brand closer to the European market and making products available here too. Meanwhile this office has been moved from Switzerland to Innsbruck, Austria, in 2016.)

Initially known for state-of-the-art carabiners and Camalots, Black Diamond has expanded its portfolio to include skis, poles, headlamps, snow safety equipment, apparel, and footwear over the years. Numerous products won international awards and have a sustainable impact on mountain sports – such as the acclaimed Camalots or the revolutionary JetForce technology for avalanche airbags.

Black Diamond is a company that’s not just for rock climbers and skiers, but one that stands for the spirit of the sports we live, their values and goals, past, present and future. Our vision is to engineer and empower the future of mountain sports and be one with the communities we serve. Since 1957, our innovative gear designs have set the standard in numerous areas. This is partly the result of dedication, desire and diligence on the part of an incredible team of people. It’s also a product of the fact that each of us are climbers and skiers ourselves, to create the most trustworthy, innovative equipment to inspire, educate and grow our mountain community.

We create equipment for the most technical, demanding users in the harshest environments. We endeavour to meet that need with innovation, rigorous engineering, and performance.
