The main gondola from town takes you up to the circuit, with its vast network of lifts and runs around the mighty Sella Ronda massif.

Most of the individual runs may be short and predominantly easy, but the distances you can cover on skis are huge and the lift system is on the whole very good, making the area great for intermediates looking to cover some serious ground. There’s also some great local skiing above Campitello and Pozza di Fassa – at the latter, the slopes are notably quieter. Canazei itself is an attractive town with bags of traditional Italian charm and some fantastic restaurants.

On the Slopes

For beginners there are two options, a gentle zone on the edge of the village, or a higher, more snowsure sector up at the top of the Ciampac gondola.

Progression on to long, gentle blues is adequate and some of the more gentle reds are also within reach for relatively inexperienced skiers and boarders.

The rest of the Val di Fassa and the Sella Ronda is one big intermediate paradise. Confident skiers should be more than capable of completing the full circuit, but if you’re looking for quiet slopes head towards Pozza di Fassa, away from the busier slopes of the Sella Ronda. Advanced skiers and boarders have a fairly limited selection of groomed blacks and some off piste – but this does rely on good natural snowfall, which at times can be limited.

In the Resort

The narrow cobbled streets and traditional-style buildings are attractively set beneath the most heavily wooded section of the Sella Ronda. The striking surroundings, traditional Italian charm and a great range of restaurants make it a great base for a week’s skiing, all on a very manageable budget – this is one of the best value resorts in Italy.
Canazei is one of the livelier resorts of the Sella Ronda, it has a good bustling feel while also retaining it’s Italian charm. Lively bars and endless options to sample fantastic Italian mountain cuisine make it an ideal destination for all groups – especially keen foodies.

There are two main airport options, Venice and Verona, both of which are between two and three hours drive away from the resort.

A variable week and weekend ahead is in store for the Italian Alps, with good snowfall in the south and west with more coming to the east as time goes on.

Piemonte and the Aosta Valley will see about 10cm of snow down across Wednesday and Thursday as low pressure systems run along the Atlantic Coast. This will start at all elevations, especially in Piemonte where it falls earlier, but as the freezing line ticks up over Wednesday and Thursday the snowfall will recede to higher ground. In the northeast, a few flocons will fall, but generally things will remain calm and occluded.

After a steady remainder to the week, some more snowfall moves in on Sunday, bringing considerable totals to the northwest – over a foot across higher ground at Cervinia, for example, and about half of this down in Piemonte. Again, limited to higher ground as the freezing line remains at c.2,000m.

In the east, around 10cm can be expected down at the same time; this will fall across all elevations as the freezing line remains lower than in other parts of the region, at around 1,500m.
