The high-altitude ski resort of Cervinia not only guarantees fantastic snow coverage but also gives access over the border to Zermatt. For that you will need an upgraded lift pass. You can notch up some serious vertical – the 22km route from the Klein Matterhorn to the village of Valtournenche has a drop of more than 2300m – all on well-groomed pistes that are now increasingly equipped with snowmaking to improve snow reliability even further.
Prices are significantly lower than over in Switzerland and the food is fantastic, both in terms of value but also quality. Accommodation is mostly within the compact village centre, but a collection of ski-in-ski-out hotels are located just above and to the east of the centre.
The slopes are high, open and mostly very sunny thanks to their westerly orientation. When the weather is bad however, visibility can be poor and wind closures are a possibility – especially for the lifts crossing to Zermatt. But the high altitude does mean you don’t need to worry about the snow as most of the pistes lie well above 2000m, giving the resort one of Europe’s longest seasons.
What was an old climbing village has grown in to a full-blown ski resort. The cobbled main street is traffic free and whilst it is not the most picturesque, the surrounding scenery is impressive. Much of the evening action happens in hotels, but there are some decent bars and restaurants – serving excellent Italian food.
As a snowsure destination for families this is a good bet, however when the weather is bad the slopes can be inhospitable for younger ones. The ski school is right in the village centre and there is a natural ice rink with a view that most can’t claim – it looks up directly at the Matterhorn. Many of the hotels have good facilities for children.
Cervinia is relatively quiet on the après front, but happy hours are a popular feature at bars in resort including Lino’s and The Yeti, especially during the spring months when the resort basks in evening sunshine. To explore the best that the entire resort has to offer, the Ski Club Rep’s social hour rotates on a weekly basis.
Summer skiing is normally made available to skiers on the glacier at Zermatt – accessible from Cervinia – soon after the winter closing date.
A local pass is available for Cervinia only (including Valtourneche), but intermediates upwards will want a full area lift pass.

High pressure dominates over most of Europe this week, thanks to the Jetstream forming a strong barrier along the west cost of Ireland, the UK and Norway. As a result, plenty of sun and fine, dry and bright conditions will be story of the week from now until the end of the weekend.
Things will remain cold, however, with a freezing line camping out at around 1,000m, occasionally peaking to 2,000m in the midday sun. Daytime highs of -5°C can be expected at 2,000m, occasionally slipping into positive temperatures throughout the week.
A few flurries of snow will move over Piemonte over this weekend, as low pressure bubbles away in the Mediterranean. This will bring about 5cm to the region, with the barrier becoming more broken down as the weekend comes to a conclusion and unsettled weather moving across the whole of the Italian Alps – it remains too early to tell how much snow this will bring.

I love to meet up with Ski Club members for a day on the slopes, preferably followed by a beer. An early 'career' in athletics (the days of Coe and Ovett!) ensured I was a late starter on the slopes at 42. I've since spent most winter hols on skis and, now retired, I'm determined to ski even more. The Geographer in me means I particularly enjoy making journeys through the landscape; ideal for all 3 of my Repping slots this year. Please try and pre-register if you are coming to ski with me in resort so I know to look out for you in the social hour or on the piste!
I started skiing with my rugger mates in my early 20`s and have never missed a season. Just loved the scenery, the challenge and the fun in the bars after a long day on the slopes.
I am delighted to be your ski-club rep in Cervinia. Looking forward to meeting you in the “Lo Stambecco Café” top of gondola 09.30 Monday 20th January.
Let's have a great week!
After a career working in offices, I have escaped!!
I love nothing more than being in the mountains – summer (cycling and hiking) and winter (skiing). The majesty of the high Alps, the wonder of fresh powder under blue skies and the complete freedom from the day-to-day. I have been skiing since the age of eight and enjoy touring, resort skiing (mainly in Switzerland and France) and off-piste (in fact anything on skis!). In my late 40s, I took up ski racing and now compete in the Mürren Inferno (www.inferno-muerren.ch) and other races across the Alps.
I love being in the mountains, skiing with like minded ski club members is great fun, whether it be a hard day in powder, cruising the pistes, enjoying aprés or a leisurely lunch in the sun shine I love it all!
I started skiing late in life and am now making up for lost time, skiing 6 to 8 weeks a year. I am also a keen swimmer, President of Oxted and Limpsfield Cricket Club and member of Tandridge Golf Club.
I learned to ski whilst serving with the Royal Air Force in Germany in the early 90s. I was hooked the first time I put a pair of skis on and can still remember the absolute joy of transitioning from snowplough to parallel. When I left the Service, I spent a season in Canada and qualified as a Level 2 Instructor. Unfortunately, life got in the way for a few years, and I didn’t ski often. But now I’m retired and looking forward to enjoying time in the mountains and skiing with great people. I look forward to meeting you.
Hello members! I've been a snowsports addict for about 10 years and love the whole lifestyle that surrounds it. I enjoy using the entire mountain and like to get to every corner. I would describe myself as a freerider, not freestyle, i'm addicted to off piste powder although I do enjoy the jumps in the park or jibbing around off the side of the piste. In 2012 i spent 2 1/2 months in canada touring 13 resorts finding some little gems along the way and fresh powder at every resort . I also love motor sport ,big boys toys and most things that burn a hole in the ozone . I have competed in a couple motorcycle sports, even the Rachau hill climb in Austria where my friend and I were the only British competitors. Another must is my annual trip to the Nurburgring. i own several motorcycles , classic VW's and a fast n furious tokyo drift BMW .Please visit the social hour to discuss the next days events, I can change the programme to what people want and the snow conditions. All hail the powder
