With direct access to the Portes du Soleil and its 580km of slopes, Châtel is perfectly placed for a winter holiday.
There’s either access via the Linga gondola towards Avoriaz and Morzine, or via the Super Châtel lift across to the Swiss side and the resort of Morgins. The latter unfortunately has a number of slow lifts and drags, plus a bus connection to complete the loop, so if you’re looking to ski the linked ski area we’d recommend catching the former. That being said, the local slopes extend across the ridgeline to Torgon and offer a good amount of variety. The only real issue remains the altitude, which although snowmaking has improved things, still causes issues at the start and end of the season, or during warm spells.
The village of Châtel itself is rather spread out, but is attractive and rustic. There’s a number of great family-friendly hotels, as well as numerous chalets dotted across the hillside. For maximum convenience, the closer you are to the Super Chatel gondola the better, otherwise you’ll need to catch the bus to the lifts each day. Off the slopes there’s a lot to do, even in bad weather, and there’s an excellent nordic centre in the valley between Châtel and neighbouring La Chapelle d’Abondance.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Châtel has been awarded two snowflakes out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability; only a quarter of Flocon Vert recipients have been awarded two snowflakes – no area has been awarded three.
- Châtel was awarded Flocon Vert status in 2015, and renewed its accreditation in 2020
- The resort is noted as having preserved traditional economies, such as agriculture, alongside the development of the ski area
- Extensive recycling and wasting sorting facilities are provided by the resort, highlighting a significant step to reducing its environmental impact

Continue flows of cold air from the East bring unsettled conditions throughout the middle of this week. Snow will therefore fall across the French Alps over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with around 20cm expected down. This will fall across most elevations, as, whilst the freezing line starts this week around 2,000m, it quickly falls – especially overnight where it could reach as low as 1,000m.
High pressure comes to dominate the region towards the end of this week, with fine, dry and bright conditions in play over Friday and Saturday. This period will also see the freezing line drop even further, reaching sea level overnight. Daytime highs of -5°C can be expected at 2,000m during this period.
More unsettled conditions and some snow are expected to move in as the new week begins.
