Cortina d'Ampezzo is a fantastic ski resort with great terrain and some truly jaw-dropping scenery.

Although many of the resort’s visitors won’t set foot on snow, the ski area is fantastic and is home to some of the best on piste skiing in the Alps. Ample snowmaking, good grooming and a real lack of crowds make for usually excellent pistes, even if Mother Nature has not been favourable. At every turn there is spectacular scenery and the trip to the top of the Tofana is well worth it for the epic views across the Italian Dolomites. The town itself has a great buzz and is full of great restaurants and bars, as well as some seriously impressive shops – although many will only be in budget for a select few!

Reps in Cortina d'Ampezzo

On the Slopes

The ski area is home to a fantastic, sunny beginners area – perfect for first timers. From here, progression onto the long, gentle blues above Socrepes is excellent, aided by good grooming and reliable snow conditions.

Intermediates will love the long blues and reds on the Tofana side of the hill, especially the dramatic runs near the summit – the views on the lift up are unique and absolutely spectacular. The time it takes to reach the summit has been significantly cut due to a new gondola between Cortina and Col Druscié.

The runs on Faloria are generally shorted but steeper and suit more advanced skiers as it is here where most of the blacks are. Although there is some off piste, the modest natural snowfall and steep Dolomite terrain mean that options are generally a little limited.

In the Resort

The resort itself is a collection of smart, private chalets and numerous hotels. Although there are some seriously expensive and glamorous options, you needn’t break the bank as there are some great family-run three and four star hotels and guesthouses. Just note that most will be a good walk or a bus ride away from the slopes, but there is a good bus service linking the lifts.

Cortina is usually very lively and the chic bars in town are often busy at the end of the ski day. While prices are generally higher than in much of Italy, they’re still not quite at Zermatt or Courchevel levels. The food, both on and off the mountain, is usually excellent, with local Dolomite dishes on most menus. Then, if shopping is your thing, there are few better ski resorts for some retail therapy.

Getting to Cortina d'Ampezzo

Venice airport is only two hours to the south of Cortina, giving ample opportunities to tie in a visit to the beautiful lagoon city on to either end of your trip. Verona is another option, but the drive takes around an hour longer.

Winter returns in a big way to many areas in the Italian Alps this week, with some huge totals in store for parts of the northwest. Here, extraordinarily unsettled conditions will bring up to a metre-and-a-half of snowfall to higher elevations, as the freezing line sits around 2,000m. This will be met by strong winds, however, so expect the leeward slopes to be heavily loaded and a lot of snow to be moved around before it settles down. Friday will see a brief pause in the idiocy, before another foot falls on Saturday – this time reaching many elevations as the freezing line drops close to 500m overnight into Sunday.

Both the east and southwest of the Italian Alps will follow similar patterns to each other. Some snow will fall over the middle of this week, with a good half-a-foot in the southwest, staying on higher ground thanks to a high freezing line. Some more snow will move in on the weekend, but with a far more limited impact that otherwise might have been.
