In 2018/19, two new fast six-pack chairlifts were built up Mont Valaisan to open up a fantastic area of off piste, as well as five new red runs. This has added more advanced terrain to the ski area, which is one of the most varied in the Aosta Valley and is renowned for holding on to great snow conditions due to its northerly orientation. In addition to this, the scenery is stunning and includes views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc.
The former mining town has expanded tastefully and the old centre is attractive. New developments have spread along the valley, but most accommodation is located within an easy walk from the Bosco Express or the Les Suches gondola. Food options are excellent and there are some cosy bars, all which boast affordable prices – it is certainly cheaper here than over in France.
The 152km of snowsure slopes offer something for almost everyone, with the only thing lacking a good network of gentle blues for beginners and less confident intermediates. The local terrain is fantastic for intermediates upwards and the slopes on the Italian side are definitely steeper than their French counterparts. Good on piste challenges can be found on piste 3 (F. Berthod) and on piste 5 (Muret), which drop steeply through the trees towards the resort.
As with La Rosière, La Thuile’s location makes it relatively quiet during the winter months. It is tucked away deep into the Aosta Valley, meaning fewer weekend visitors drop in, making the resort a relaxed and peaceful place. That being said, there are some cosy bars for an après ski drink and a number of good restaurants – here you get the benefit of both French and Italian cuisine.
Try and base yourself near the lifts if possible to make your stay as convenient as it can be. And don’t worry, the walk from here into town or for drinks and dinner is not a long one. The lift pass includes two days in other Aosta resorts – buses run to nearby Courmayeur and Pila is nearby.
You can either fly into Geneva and then drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel, or drive up the Aosta Valley from Turin. Both trips take around two hours.

A decidedly mixed week is in store across Italy through the end of this week and through the weekend. Things will start mild across the region, with positive temperatures expected at 2,000m. High pressure will bring fine, dry and bright conditions to southwesterley reaches, whilst other areas will retain a mix of cloud and sun.
A large, dense area of low pressure will move in over Ireland, the UK and Northern Europe, bringing snow to many areas on Thursday. Snow will fall from Thursday morning onwards, initially across higher ground but reaching lower slopes as the freezing line plummets; -10°C can be expect across the Italian Alps on Friday.
The best snowfall will fall across higher ground such as the Aosta Valley, with about 15cm down over Thursday and into Friday. Elsewhere, higher slopes of Piemonte and the Dolomites will see a few useful centimetres to keep things fresh. High pressure returns across the region on Saturday, with fine, dry and bright conditions dominating – temperatures will gradually lift as the freezing line climbs over the course of the weekend. Sunday will once again bring more cloud, a possible harbinger of more unsettled and snowy conditions moving in for Christmas week.
