The 55km of tree-lined slopes above the village of Les Houches are where the masses descend on snowy days when the upper lifts in the valley are closed,
The Kandahar World Cup Downhill route offers up a fantastic challenge and there’s some nice terrain off the back of Prarion in the trees on the way down towards nearby St Gervais. Of course, Les Houches also acts a great springboard to explore the rest of the Chamonix Valley, which is world-renowned for its off piste, steep skiing and touring terrain.
Les Houches’ old core is pretty and traditional, but most accommodation is located a little to the west, near the foot of the access lifts. Chalets form the bulk of what’s on offer, but there are a couple of hotels offering decent value accommodation.
On the whole Les Houches is quiet, with a relaxed vibe in the evening. If you’re looking out for active nightlife, a wide choice of restaurants and shopping opportunities, then head into Chamonix, a short bus ride away. The proximity to Chamonix means access from Geneva is easy, either by car, private/shared transfer or train.

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Les Houches – as part of the wider Chamonix Valley resort area – has been awarded two snowflakes out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability; only a quarter of Flocon Vert recipients have been awarded two snowflakes – no area has been awarded three.
- Les Houches & Chamonix was accredited in 2013 and renewed in 2017
- Special focus was paid to educational measures taken by the resort
- The reduction in emissions and transition plan away from fossil fuels has been particularly praised by the Flocon Vert scheme

Really good snowfall has come to the French Alps, driven by a large area of low pressure over the Atlantic and another over Scandinavia that is allowing cold, unsettled Arctic air to flow down to the region.
Up to 1.5m of snow could be expected between now and the end of the week, although this will fall mostly across higher ground as the freezing line sits at 2,000m and will remain there throughout this period. The bulk of the snow will fall on Wednesday and Thursday, with a foot and a foot-and-a-half expected down on each day.
High pressure will then move in over the weekend, bringing fine, dry and bright conditions and plummeting temperatures as the freezing line drops off a cliff, helping to preserve this new snow.
Expect the avalanche forecast to increase alongside this new snowfall. Check your local forecast carefully and plan any backcountry and off-piste travel carefully.
