Sitting in a high valley right up by the Swiss border and just over the hills from St Moritz, Livigno deserves better recognition.

Its 115km of pistes are very snowsure, with most at well over 2000m and backed up by a comprehensive snowmaking system. They best suit intermediate skiers, but more advanced skiers will also enjoy the freeride options and beginners are well catered for on the gentle slopes at the edge of the valley. The rest is also home to one of the best parks in the Alps – it is no wonder that GB Park & Pipe choose it as their training base for much of the winter.

Pros and cons

But when it does snow, lack of trees seriously affects visibility

On the Slopes

In town, prices are appreciably lower than at many major resorts (the resort is tax free), especially when you compare it to St Moritz over the border. But you don’t compromise on quality, much of the accommodation is of a high standard, the food is usually excellent and there are some good bars that can become lively on a sunny day – fuelled no doubt by very affordable drinks.

The west side of the valley is home to three excellent beginner zones, located on the sunny and gentle slopes on the edge of town. Progression from here is then very good, particularly at Costaccia and across the valley under the new chair at Mottolino. Long, open reds then dominate the rest of the piste map – particularly around Mt Sponda and the high point of the resort at Carosello 3000.

For more advanced skiers and snowboarders, there are some great steeper runs over at Mt. Delle Neve as well as some underrated freeriding terrain. The altitude and northeast aspect of the Mottolino slopes makes these prime for off piste and with a set of touring skins a local guide, there is some excellent terrain to explore. Anyone keen on freestyle will love the range of features set up on Mottolino each winter, which include some monster jumps.

In the Resort

The resort of Livigno is centred between the bases of the Mottolino and Costaccia access lifts. It is here where you’ll find the most conveniently located accommodation, the best choice of restaurants and the liveliest bars. The village then spreads along the valley, with several different hubs connected by a bus service.

Away from the mountain, Livigno is home to one of the best networks of cross country skiing trails in the Italian Alps – there are 30km in total, 5km of which are fully covered with snowmaking. There are some great fatbiking trails in the open valley and for bad weather days, the Aquagranda swimming pool complex is a great place to visit.

Getting to Livigno

Livigno is located right up buy the Swiss border in a remote part of the Italian Alps. Getting here takes around four hours from both of Milan’s airports, as well as airports in Verona and Bergamo.

Continuing fine, dry and bright conditions can be expected across the Italian Alps throughout this week as high pressure remains camped out above the continent. Some cloud cover will pass as the week continues, with almost unmitigated sunshine on Thursday and Friday.

The freezing line will be incredibly predictable throughout this period – dropping to around 1,500m overnight but climbing to 2,200m during the midday sun in the East, 1,000m and 2,000m in all other areas. This will bring temperatures of about +1°C during the day and -5°C overnight at 2,000m.

More unstable weather is expected to move in over this weekend, bringing with it some snow. Temperatures are expected to rise alongside this, however, so expect much needed relief to be limited to higher ground. The westerly Italian Alps are currently in line to see the best of this snowfall.
