Ski Club Experiences (previously Instructor-led Guiding, ILG) are no longer being offered by the Club. You are invited to ski with the Club via our Reps service in Méribel, with details available here.
Most won’t even need to explore the other valleys, but if you’re a keen intermediate upwards then it will add another dimension to your holiday this winter.
Méribel is the ideal resort for a chalet holiday, with a huge choice of tour operators calling this resort home. Unlike many other purpose-built resorts, it has been tastefully designed, with wood-clad buildings the norm and not the exception. There is a lively après scene – Le Rond Point and the Folie Douce are the hotspots – but this is also a good resort for families.
A modern lift system whisks skiers and boarders around a vast network of pistes. Most are best suited to beginners and intermediates but in the form of Mont Vallon in particular, Méribel has some great terrain for advanced and expert skiers, including two new red runs in the Roc de Fer area this year. The location at the heart of the Three Valleys makes access to Courchevel and Val Thorens super quick and easy.
More experienced skiers and boarders have the entire Three Valleys playground at their disposal, which after fresh snow opens up a huge range of terrain. The altitude usually preserves the snow in good condition, but parts of the Méribel valley are prone to strong sunshine which can alter the snow’s condition.
Méribel’s jewel in its crown is Mont Vallon, a vast playground with two steep groomed runs and a huge expanse of ready-to-ski off piste. The 2018 upgrades to the Mont Vallon gondola have been a great improvement – significantly cutting queues and making the journey up much quicker.
For a purpose-built resort, Méribel is much more attractive than most, especially its near neighbour Val Thorens. A lot of accommodation is in chalets, many of which are catered and run by British tour operators – this is the ideal place to try your first chalet holiday experience. There are two bases to chose from, with Mottaret being higher and more snowsure, but it is also home to some of the bigger accommodation blocks.
Méribel is a good choice for families, especially those wanting a chalet holiday – most of which will specially cater for children. The nursery slopes are nearby and the sunny aspect of the resort is a bonus during mid-winter when other ski areas can be cold. Off the slopes, the swimming pool is good for a cold, snowy day and there is even an opportunity for children to build their own igloo – contact the tourist office.
Méribel comes alive as the lifts begin to close and the resort has a very vibrant après scene. Le Rond Point is usually a focal point and there is raucous live music and table dancing seven nights a week – head there between 5-6.30 to see it at its liveliest. Add in the Folie Douce and numerous bars and clubs in town, and you can really see why this resort is high on the list for those looking to party.
Chambéry is the closest airport to Méribel and private transfers are the best option – the drive takes around an hour and a half. Geneva is further away, with the drive taking around two and a half hours.
A great option is to travel by train, catching the Eurostar and TGV to the town of Moûtiers in the valley before grabbing a quick bus transfer up to the resort. Check out the Ski Club’s Guide to travelling to resort by train.
Connections to the rest of the Three Vallees network open and close on the same dates.

Updated 20/12
The timeline for Christmas week snow is accelerated massively as a huge, dense area of low pressure gets swept in on the Jetstream to cover much of central and northern Europe as the weekend continues. Temperatures will remain cold through this weekend, with a freezing line dropping to 500m on Sunday and, as a result temperatures of -10°C being the norm.
Snow will first arrive in flurries on Saturday, but it is Sunday where things really shift through the gears. At least half-a-metre of snow is expected down, across all elevations as the freezing line falls away, continuing on into Monday when an additional 15cm can be expected. The avalanche risk is already expected to tick up in many areas across France, with a Level 4 – High danger expected from Sunday onwards, with notes for persistent weak layer and wind loading problems. Care should be taken when skiing in the backcountry and careful route planning should be undertaken.
Things are expected to settle down as the Christmas week continues, with Christmas Day itself expected to be fine, dry and bright, albeit remaining fairly cold and fresh. Some beautiful riding conditions are perhaps in store over the Christmas and New Year’s period.

I am a keen skier and passed my Leaders (now Reps) course in 2018 and I have mainly skied in the European Alps although have ventured as far as Whistler and Colorado! I ski when ever I can and am happy at any level, beginner to advanced, on piste, off piste. I have also done some ski touring and am keen to develop this further. I also like the mountains in the summer and have summitted several 4000m+ peaks including Mont Blanc and Grand Paradiso. I am looking forward to this season and what it may bring!
Like the line in a Bob Dylan song, "My Heart's in the Highlands". I started walking in the Scottish Highlands from a young age before taking up skiing in my mid 30s and becoming instantly hooked. I have skied with family and friends in many parts of Europe with a few detours to the Rockies. Now, as a retired GP, I can indulge my passion for the hills, whether on skis, skins or foot. When not up high, I can be found refereeing football on the Bristol Downs, playing bridge or tending my allotment, all to the soundtrack of the 2016 Nobel Laureate.
I have been on snow since the age of 2 when I began exploring Argentiere, mostly clinging to my parents' legs as I bumbled along! Since then I have improved somewhat, having skied with family, raced on the FIS circuit and volunteered as a Ski Club Leader for the last 5 years, including being awarded 'Young Leader of the Year' in 2013.
Moving away from technical on-piste skiing I now hunt out as much off-piste as possible and really enjoy finding new routes and conquering other parts of the mountain. Most of all I love being able to share my enthusiasm and enjoyment of the sport with others who feel the same. At the end of the day it's all about having fun. Originally from the Isle of Arran, I then moved to London to pursue my architectural career and now work in Bath leading a fantastic Lido restoration project.
As a Ski Club Rep I am hoping to follow in my father David's footsteps and enjoy sharing time in the mountains with great people for many years to come...
Hi, I'm David, and I've been riding the snow on skis and boards since I started work... I mostly ski these days, and whilst I love a good powder day ( who doesn't!) I also enjoy a good piste blast. I'm equally happy with a nice mountain coffee or vin chaud, and always keen to sample mountain cuisine. Favourite spots - anywhere it’s snowing! When I’m not skiing, I’m usually found in a dinghy, on a bike, or behind a camera. Ciao!
I have been skiing since childhood and enjoy the sport and the mountains as much as ever. I definitely enjoy a challenge but equally happy to cruise reds and blues in the sunshine. I have skied on my own and with the Club – the Club is a lot more fun. I am looking forward to meeting new members and more memorable days on the piste. Away from the mountains, I cycle a bit and get frustrated on the golf course!
