Weekly programme, social hour, and contact details
Our only issue with the ski area is the relatively low altitude. Despite a lot of snowmaking, the resort runs can be closed, especially early and late in the season and snow quality can suffer on south-facing slopes. Morzine is a large resort – almost a town – meaning that some accommodation is a walk away from the slopes, but what you get is a huge choice of places to stay, restaurants to eat in and bars to have an après drink at – lots of these are very lively, especially at weekends when visitors make the most of the quick transfer from Geneva to pack out the slopes and the bars.
Although there are a couple of short drags on the edge of town, the best beginner slopes are in the Kids Zone located at mid-mountain level, at the top of the Pleney gondola. Longer greens and gentle blues can be found across in the Super Morzine sector. More confident skiers and boarders will be able to enjoy the vast majority of the Les Gets-Morzine ski area – our favourite runs are the long reds served by the recently built Ranfoilly Express.
Exploring the rest of the Portes du Soleil is well worth it for confident intermediates upwards – advanced and expert skiers should certainly buy the full lift pass and explore all 580km of slopes. Locally however, there are some decent steep runs at Mont Chery and also above Morzine in the Nyon and Chamossière sectors – where the best off piste can also be found.
The size of Morzine means it has a huge variety of accommodation – but if you’re looking for maximum convenience try and be as near to the Pleney gondola as possible. It has a very family-friendly reputation, with lots of well-appointed, catered chalets to choose from. Despite this, Morzine is one of the livelier French ski resorts, with a good après ski scene, especially at weekends when visitors flock in for a couple of days on snow.
Off the slopes there is plenty to cater for the non-skiing market. Morzine is home to a very good swimming pool and sports centre – ideal for snowy days, as well as an ice hockey team to cheer on throughout the winter! Outdoors, there is an excellent network of winter walking trails and cross country tracks, plus a couple of sledging routes.
Morzine caters well for families. On the mountain there are gentle, sheltered slopes and play areas. And there are plenty of other activities. Club des Piou Piou is run by the ESF school and takes children from three years old.
Morzine’s apres-ski is good by French resort standards. Several places around the base area get busy as the slopes empty – the Tremplin has live music’ and a lively atmosphere. The Crepu is a sports bar, pleasantly quiet early on but livening up later. Other options include the long-established Bar Robinson and the Dixie, with sport on TV, a cellar bar and some live music. Between the slopes and the centre, and all in the same building, are several spots: the Cavern, which is popular with seasonaires; the Coyote for arcade games and DJ. The Opera and Laury’s are late-night haunts.
Getting here from Geneva is very easy – the drive only takes an hour – so this is an excellent weekend destination. The drive from the UK is one of the quickest and shortest too.

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Morzine – as part of the wider Morzine-Avoriaz resort area – has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Updated 20/12
The timeline for Christmas week snow is accelerated massively as a huge, dense area of low pressure gets swept in on the Jetstream to cover much of central and northern Europe as the weekend continues. Temperatures will remain cold through this weekend, with a freezing line dropping to 500m on Sunday and, as a result temperatures of -10°C being the norm.
Snow will first arrive in flurries on Saturday, but it is Sunday where things really shift through the gears. At least half-a-metre of snow is expected down, across all elevations as the freezing line falls away, continuing on into Monday when an additional 15cm can be expected. The avalanche risk is already expected to tick up in many areas across France, with a Level 4 – High danger expected from Sunday onwards, with notes for persistent weak layer and wind loading problems. Care should be taken when skiing in the backcountry and careful route planning should be undertaken.
Things are expected to settle down as the Christmas week continues, with Christmas Day itself expected to be fine, dry and bright, albeit remaining fairly cold and fresh. Some beautiful riding conditions are perhaps in store over the Christmas and New Year’s period.

I am a lover of all things mountain- Skiing in winter and cycling/hiking in summer. My ‘home’ area is in Morzine/Avoriaz as I have owned a place there for many years. I love to ski on and off piste and increasingly choose to ski tour when possible. I rode my 8th Etape Du Tour in Morzine last summer and have vowed never to do so again….!! Winter 23/24 will be my first season as a Ski Club Rep and I can’t wait to share the pistes and make new friends all over the Alps and beyond. I look forward to meeting as many members as possible this winter – please track me down in resort!
My first ski holiday was with family at the age of 8 in Austria, getting there and back on the train. I learnt properly at University on the dry ski slope at Hillend and the slopes of varopis Scottish resorts (mostly Glencoe). Since then I have skied extensively throughout Europe, loving the challenges and taking family and friends on tours. I live in Dorset, enjoying the outdoors and am semi retired
We are still early in the process of assigning Reps for the 2024/25 winter season. Thank you for your patience whilst we make these arrangements.
I discovered skiing unexpectedly at the age of 40, and it quickly became my passion, some might even call it an obsession. Since then, I’ve been making up for lost time by exploring many of Europe’s larger ski resorts, as well as some hidden gems, and have made several trips to the incredible Whistler. Over the last few winters, I’ve had the privilege of spending multiple weeks on the slopes, deepening my experience, honing my skills, and expanding my knowledge of the sport.
In December 2022, I completed the Ski Club of Great Britain Rep’s Course in Tignes, and since then, I’ve eagerly embraced the role of Ski Club Rep both in resorts and on Freshtracks Holidays. I can’t wait for the upcoming season, where I look forward to skiing with fellow Ski Club members and sharing my enthusiasm for this incredible sport!
Hi, I'm Freddy! I'll never say no to off piste and freeride skiing if the conditions are right. Having skied for as long as I can remember, you're in safe hands. Charismatic, energetic, and sociable are three words to describe me - I look forward to meeting some of you on the slopes this winter!
I spend most of the winter in Morzine, where I once ran a chalet. I have written a series of books about my winter life called 'Skiing with Demons (1, 2 and 3). They document my experiences as a chalet host and my sometimes tempestuous relationship with skiing. My summer passion is fell walking and I try to spend most of it in the Lake District and on the Pennine Mountains.
