The lower slopes are a good mix of sunny blues and reds with the Kandahar black providing a real challenge – although slightly less so now it is groomed every night as gone are the big bumps. These are below the treeline so are great in bad weather, but the snowsure higher slopes can close or be fairly inhospitable in bad weather.
There is a small beginner area with a magic carpet and rope tow in the village, on a sunny slope by the Jungfrau Hotel, right next to the excellent Swiss Ski School and it is ideal for first timers. Up the hill lie the main nursery slopes at Allmendhubel, up the funicular. These are a little on the steep side, but are secluded and quiet. From there, you have easy blue runs to graduate to in each sector.
The Engetal blue below Birg is a good easy cruise and it always has great snow. Lower down, the best easy cruising run on the lower slopes is the north-facing blue down to Winteregg – which is now fully equipped with snowmaking. For skiers looking for fast turns and steeper pitches, the Finel and Gimmeln reds off the Schiltgrat chair are the runs to hit. A day trip or two to Wengen or Grindelwald is also well worth it.
The steep but now groomed black run from the top of the Schilthorn is a must for any advanced skier. There are also several steep, groomed (new in 2018 was the 88% Direttissima black) and mogul runs at Birg, as well as some great off piste from the Schiltgrat ridge, where steep and shady routes drop down into the Blumental bowl. The potential for ski touring or more adventurous runs from the Schilthorn is almost limitless, but a guide is recommended for these tough routes.
You can’t fail to be struck by Mürren’s beauty and tranquillity. Paths and narrow lanes weave between little wooden chalets and a handful of bigger hotel buildings – all normally blanketed by snow. Mürren’s traffic-free status has been somewhat eroded but even Wengen seems busy by comparison.
Mürren is perfect for a quiet family holiday, not least because of the relaxed, safe and snowy car-free village, but also the off slope facilities. The sports centre has been improved significantly in the past few years, whilst ice skating and curling remain popular on the ice rink. The several tobogganing routes are a major attraction, with sled hire available from all hire shops.
Après ski is mellow in Mürren, but the Gondelbar outside the Jungfrau is a great place to grab a drink at the end of a sunny ski day, or head to the cosy Jägerstübli bar in the Bellevue Hotel if the snow is falling. Later on head out to the remodelled Tächi Bar in the Hotel Eiger, which gets lively at weekends and particularly during the week of the Inferno Race.
Each area in the Jungfrau region, including the separate Grindelwald areas, employ separate opening and closing dates:
Individual area tickets are no longer available – instead, one lift pass now covers all Jungfrau resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren

Warm weather opens the weekend across Switzerland, with the freezing line sitting high at close to or above 4,000m throughout. Things change as the weekend continues, with temperatures cooling as the freezing line comes down to as low as 1,500m.
Cloud cover dominates, and with it precipitation; this will fall as rain initially, but will turn to snow as temperatures fall. Around 12cm will fall in steady flurries throughout the weekend and into the new week, falling almost entirely on higher ground as the freezing line remains above 2,000m during this period.
High pressure brings fine, dry and bright conditions especially across the west of the region.
Thus concludes our snow overviews for this season. Thank you to everyone who has read them this season, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

I am lucky enough to spend most of my time in the great outdoors after a 30 plus year career in finance. I have loved skiing since the first time I tried it as a student - the scenery, the people and the exhilaration. When not skiing I enjoy sailing, cycling, walking, gardening and travelling to new places. I look forward to meeting you on the snow!
I am fortunate to have learnt to ski at school in the 1970's, and have continued to do so ever since including resorts in Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, North America and Canada. My passion is skiing, but I am also able to snowboard and therefore understand some of the terrain to be best avoided on a snowboard. My home is in North Yorkshire and my other interests include keeping fit, mountain biking, golf and off-shore sailing. I look forward to meeting you and sharing some laughs! P.S. I enjoy the Apres Ski.............
I first skied in Aviemore, aged 14 - a two-day weekend by overnight coach from London - and was hooked! However, I didn't ski regularly until my mid-20s. After that most of the holiday budget went on skiing virtually every year. I am lucky to have a wife and grown-up children who all love skiing as much as I do. 23 years ago, we discovered ski touring and did the Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route which we repeated in 2016 with our daughter. Apart from the obvious joys of skiing, I have loved introducing my family and friends to the sport - especially discovering the added dimension that off-piste opens up. This year, I will be a Resort and Freshtracks Rep respectively in Mürren (over the 80th Inferno 100th anniversary of the Kandahar Club) and on an off-piste trip to the Dolomites. I live in Dorset with a bridge-playing wife, a springer spaniel and several chickens. At home, when not working, I enjoy fishing, tennis, walking (recent highlights include the Inca Trail and the South West Coast Path).
Ever since I was not allowed on public bus with my 2m 20cms skis (old days) from Perth Academy – I was determined to go skiing. I love teaching many sports, aerobics, squash, basketball, windsurfing and skiing. (qualified PE teacher) I also created the world’s first multi-coloured dry ski slope (red, blue and gold) while Director of Leisure in Durham. I now live 45 minutes away from the Lecht
I'm a fashion designer and have been making gloves that don't keep you warm but look cool! I'm now in the throes of making a gorgeous ski glove that will suit skiers and apres skiers alike! Hope to have this launched for next winter www.corneliajames.com
I live near the South Downs in East Susex and am still on my first husband! We have 3 children, Leonora, Freds & Nic who can ski the pants off me and constantly keep me on my toes!
Ski touring in alps, norway and central asia. Recently started telemarking, raced the inferno a few times, this year entered super 3. Really enjoy spending time skiing and telemarking being in the mountains.
