The slopes here are very much the main attraction and these are served by a good network of fast lifts.

All of the terrain is wooded, providing excellent shelter in bad weather – which is very useful as the resort boasts an impressive 10m of snowfall a year on average. As with many Japanese resorts, off piste skiing is limited, but many runs are left un-groomed after fresh snowfall and tree-skiing is allowed at the top of the mountain – so head here as soon as possible after a fresh dump of powder.

The resort itself is also a major attraction thanks to its renowned hot springs, which were discovered in the 8th Century. With traditional ryokan inns and narrow cobbled streets, this resort really gives you an authentic Japanese skiing experience, a contrast from a much larger resorts such as Niseko.

Getting here is easy from the city of Nagano, which is only a couple of hours from Tokyo via bullet train.

Snow will mix with rain as a flash of mild conditions hits Honshu, but this will quickly change as the temperatures drops through the middle of this week – around a foot of snow will still fall before close of play on Thursday. There will then be a (gasp) pause in the snowfall as a rare moment of high pressure brings sunshine to the region, with temperatures turning milder again over the weekend.

Hokkaido will see more of the usual Jappow conditions this week, with steady snowfall and cold temperatures dominating for much of this period – around a foot of snow will come down over the course of this week and the weekend.
