The resort is located a gondola ride above the town of Aosta and makes for a perfect base for snowsure piste skiing.

Most of the runs are marked red and are usually in great condition, thanks to decent natural snowfall, excellent grooming and a comprehensive snowmaking system. Its location just above Aosta means that Pila is much quieter during the week, both on the slopes and afterwards in the bars and restaurants.

On the Slopes

At the top of the Aosta gondola there is a neat beginner zone, as is the case in Pila itself. From here progression on to longer blues is good during the week and the middle of the day, but when the main Grimod blue is busy it is a more formidable challenge for less confident skiers and boarders. For intermediates, Pila is home to some of Italy’s best groomed runs, most of which are tree-lined which makes this a fantastic place to be in bad weather.

For more advanced skiers and boarders there are some good blacks above the treeline at the top of the resort and the trees can become one big playground after fresh snowfall. There are also some decent touring options nearby.

In the Resort

Pila has great, purpose-built convenience and as a result is very popular with families and school groups. There is lots of good value accommodation and there are numerous restaurants both in resort and on the slopes, specialising in local Italian cuisine. An alternative is the charming town of Aosta down in the valley – here you will find more variety on the bar, restaurant and shop front.

Getting to Pila

Turin is the closest airport and on a good run, the drive should take less than an hour and a half. Both of Milan’s airport’s make for good alternatives, but the drive will take around two hours.

The west and northwest of the Italian Alps will see steady spring conditions throughout this weekend and into the new week. Overnight freeze will be met with daytime thaw, as the freezing line starts down at c.2,000m but climbs to 3,000m in the midday sun. Things will turn cooler – with the same freeze-thaw pattern – as the new week begins, the line dropping to 2,500m in the day and 1,750m overnight.

In the Dolomites, things begin in much the same way, with the freezing line peaking at over 3,000m on Saturday. Things will turn much colder, however, as the overnight freeze drops off to 1,500m and rises only as far as 2,000m in the midday sun. Perhaps a few floccons will fall, but this will barely register against the snowstick.

More unsettled conditions are likely to move in over next weekend adn the following week, bringing more snow to the region – the precise when, where and how much are still to far out to predict with certainty.
