You will have a great time exploring the slopes on the north and south sides of Mont Tremblant. There are some excellent long cruisey runs on the Versant Sud (South Side), whilst recent upgrades – including a lot of additional glading of the trees – on the Versant Nord (North Side) have made this a great place for more advanced skiers and snowboarders.
The purpose built village is attractive and has been designed to be in keeping with old Quebec-style architecture. It is lively, especially at weekends when locals from Montreal (and Ottawa, slightly further afield) come up to ski, as well as plenty of Americans on Washington Week and MLK day holidays. There is a good collection of bars and restaurants to choose from as a result. The beginner’s area on the edge of the village is excellent, with great facilities to help keep kids warm on those bitterly cold Quebec days.
Progression on to longer greens served by the Flying Mile fast quad is excellent, with Nansen taking skiers from top to bottom on a gently undulating green – perfect for confidence boosting! Even on the steeper Versant Nord there is a summit to base green. Intermediates will enjoy the blues under the Lowell Thomas quad or the long sunny blue down to the base of the Le Soleil quad. Recent developments have included the replacement of the old, fixed-grip Lowell Thomas quad on Versant Nord with a modern, fast, four-pack. For the traditionalist, the loveable fixed-grip four pack serving The Edge remains in place.
Advanced skiers and riders have a great selection of terrain parks to choose from, as well as a number of steep groomed blacks. The best runs lie directly down under the gondola on the Versant Sud or to skiers right of the Duncan Express on the Versant Nord. Extensive thinning of previously dense forest on this side of the mountain has really upped the available ungroomed terrain – head here after fresh snowfall for some of the East Coast’s best glade, including recently thinned Dyna-Griffe, long known to locals as one of the gnarliest trails on the mountain.
The mountain comes to life with various events throughout the year, including the “24h Tremblant”, where teams of skiers and snowboarders take part in a 24h endurance relay to raise money for charity each December, and the end-of-season Caribou Cup; skiers in fancy dress look to skim across a pool – taking place each December, teams of skiers and snowboarders take part in an endurance relay to raise money for charity, with lifts turning all through the night! In the spring, as temperatures warm up, Tremblant hosts its famous spring party, the Caribou Cup, a classic pool skimming ski competition turned up to the next level.
Situated in the heart of French-speaking Canada, Tremblant offers a uniquely Quebec take on skiing. Look out for maple taffy stands on the streets winding up to the resort base, and an abundance of the French language (don’t worry, Tremblant is metropolitan enough that language is never an issue, including with instruction). The resort base was developed by Intrawest – the same firm that built much of Whistler. It has been tastefully designed to look like traditional Quebec and you’ll find the centre attractive and colourful.
There is a great buzz within the centre, aided by the entirely pedestrianised village centre, winding its way up from the day lodge and littered with shops, bars and restaurants as you stroll. For those needing a rest after a long day, an open air gondola links the day lodge with the main square at the base of the slopes, removing the need to walk up the hill. There are 13 hotels in the resort base, alongside more than 30 restaurants, cafes and bars, including some good post-skiing watering holes and a good selection of restaurants. Le P’tit Caribou has been voted the best après ski bar in North America for a decade running, so be sure to check it out.
There is a lot to do off the slopes, aided by the flat valley below the resort and the frozen lake. There is ice skating and ice fishing, as well as a big network of cross country and winter walking trails – you can even go fatbiking in the snow.
Elsewhere, the old village offers a more authentic collection of B&Bs, apartments, holiday homes and a handful of hotels. It lies about 15-20 minutes away on the regular village bus that runs between the resort, the village and the small neighbouring town of Saint Jovite, past the old resort of Gray Rocks that closed in 2012.
Tremblant hosts its own casino, accessible at the bottom of the Versant Soleil (Sunny Side) that neighbours the Versant Sud (South Side), as well as on the village bus and connecting Casino Gondola. This area is also home to extensive Park+Ski facilities, enabling day and weekend trippers from Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec, including plenty of regulars from Ottawa and Toronto.

High pressure dominates the Left Coast and Rockies this week, bringing sun but cold conditions to many areas. The coldest of this will be in the Rockies, where Arctic air over the Plains will see overnight lows of -25°C possible. Things remain dry throughout the region for this week and weekend.
Mixed conditions dominate over the St Lawrence, which will see a burst of milder weather in the middle of this week bringing around a foot of snow down overnight Wednesday into Thursday. Temperatures will return to cold, however, with daytime highs of -15°C possible.
