Built from scratch in the mid-1970s, Valmorel is unlike any of its contemporaries - its central development feels like a tiny mountain town and is not an eyesore like most French purpose-built resorts.

Valmorel is the main resort in 'Le Grand Domaine' - the ski area it shares with St-Francois and Longchamp.
The ski area is excellent for beginners and early intermediates. 70% of the runs are either green or blues. The main beginners area in the resort is accessed from the top of the Rocher lift. Those looking to progress should test themselves on the gentle blues emanating from the top of the Côte Soleil lift before moving on to the blues at the top of the Pierrafort gondola. Advanced skiers have a good number of options available to them with 15km of blacks, the challenging Combe de Riondet snowcross and some challenging off piste, particularly on the Massif de la Lauzière (you may want to hire a guide).
The resort has a few self-catering apartments to stay in, as well as a single hotel. There are a good number of restaurants and a surprising number of bars for such a small resort. The easiest way to get there is to fly to Geneva and then take a two hour transfer. Another option is to take the train as far as Moûtiers and then take a short transfer.

After the excellent snowfall at the start of this week, things settle down across the region for the remainder of this week. High pressure dominates throughout, meaning fine, dry and bright conditions are in store for Christmas Day and right the way through to the end of the weekend.
Temperatures will re cool, with a freezing line hovering around 1,500m overnight and spiking up to 2,000m during the midday sun – that means highs of 1-3°C can be expected at 2,000m.
Otherwise, things are holding steady with some excellent skiing conditions coming up.
The Ski Club office is closed on Friday 28 December – there will be no overviews published on this date, returning Tuesday 31 December. The Ski Club wishes you a Merry Christmas!
