Although Wengen is famous for the fearsome Lauberhorn Downhill course – the longest and one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit – its slopes are best suited to intermediates.
The village was a farming community long before skiing arrived; it is still tiny, but dominated by sizeable hotels, mostly of Victorian origin. So it is not exactly chocolate-box pretty, but it is charming and relaxed, and almost traffic-free. The short main street is the hub. Lined with chalet-style shops and hotels, it also has the ice rink and village nursery slopes right next to it.
Wengen is an attractive and reassuring village for families. The nursery slope is in the centre and the Playhouse kindergarten is in the tourist office nearby. There’s loads to do off the slopes, in including tobogganing, curling, ice skating, swimming and winter walking.
If you’re used to raving in Kitzbühel or Val Thorens, Wengen is quiet on the après scene, especially for young people. But a number of bars are still popular at the end of the day, including the Pickel Bar, the ‘cosy’ bar of the Silberhorn Hotel, the traditional Tanne and the ‘lively’ Rocks Bar, with plasma screens showing Sky Sports.
On the mountain, the outdoor Läger Bar, next to the Männlichen chair, is good for sitting in a deckchair in the sun. Tipirama (a wigwam at Kleine Scheidegg) is a fun place immediately after skiing ‘if not too cold’, sometimes with DJs and live bands. The Wäsch bar at the Bumps section of the home run is a popular final-run stop-off.
Wengen’s enviable location on the northern side of the Swiss Alps makes it a dream to get to. The best way is to use Switzerland’s quick, clean and efficient railway network to deliver you directly from the airport to the heart of the resort. Journey times from Zurich Airport take around three hours, or from Geneva Airport four. If you are on a transfer or driving yourself, note that Wengen is mostly car free; vehicles stop in the valley at Lauterbrunnen, from where you hop on the train for the short but sharp climb up the side of the valley to Wengen.
Each area in the Jungfrau region, including the separate Grindelwald areas, employ separate opening and closing dates:
Individual area tickets are no longer available – instead, one lift pass now covers all Jungfrau resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren
// | Day Ticket | 3 Days | 6 Days |

Today’s “Last Blast” turned out to be more of a “fizzle”, except for the violent “blast” of wind which forced the closure of all the lifts in all the Jungfrau areas from midday or, in some parts, even earlier. Storm Nelson has been wreaking havoc all over Europe for the last couple of days and Switzerland has not escaped its attentions. Wind advisories at our usual meet point warned of “lift closures are possible at any time” for the next few days.
We started the day on the Mannlichen slopes, enjoying the red run (3) down to the Lager chair in good visibility before tacking Gummi Sud in the hope of accessing the Fallboden and Wixi pistes before they might be closed by the increasing winds. Alas, as we neared the top of the Gummi chairlift, we could see that the Eigernordwand lift had already been denuded of its signature orange-canopied six-seater chairs, leaving the Eiger Express as the only means of accessing our favourite Eigergletscher pistes. Worse was to come – a quick check of the website showed that Wixi was also already closed which meant that Fallboden would be closed as there would be no exit route (save for skinning!) from its slopes. With the Lauberhorn also closed and the Eiger Express terminal effectively inaccessible to us without returning to Mannlichen and a tedious download on the gondola from Holenstein it was clear we needed a new plan.
Determined to make the most of the available remaining skiing we proposed to ski Honnegg and the red 11 Barhag through the trees back to the Mannlichen pistes. On arriving at the bottom of the Honnegg lift we were astonished to encounter a scene rarely observed there, even on the resort’s busiest days – a lift queue! However, the Honnegg lift’s speed and capacity is such that we were soon on our way to the top. There we found an extremely crowded slope that had been stripped of much of its loose snow, either by the many skiers who were being funnelled into the area by the surrounding lift closures or by the high winds. Time for another change of plan!
Recognising that routes that depended on chairlifts remaining open might not be viable for very much longer we agreed to head towards Brandegg for coffee, thinking that at least we could rely on the train back to the Kleine Scheidegg area even if wind closed all the lifts. Piste 22 proved highly enjoyable, if a little slow at times – either from the wind driving us backwards at the top, or from the sticky slushy snow which prevailed towards the bottom. At Brandegg we enjoyed coffees and hot chocolate sitting outside in the weak sun as an alarmingly warm foehn wind played over us.
After coffee we returned to Kleine Scheidegg by train. On the way up we could see that all the chairlifts were either closing or already closed, as was the Mannlichen gondola. The strong wind that greeted us as we exited the train was all the confirmation we needed that our ski day was either done, or almost done. Some in our party elected to download by train while an intrepid few thought it worth braving the gale force winds along the FoxRun (blue 36) back towards Wengen.
This is the last snow report about Wengen from a Ski Club Rep until December, as the service will close for this season from tomorrow.
Sunny intervals in the morning, but increasingly overcast as the day progressed. Strong winds, getting even stronger through the day.

Updated 20/12
The timeline for Christmas week snow is accelerated massively as a huge, dense area of low pressure gets swept in on the Jetstream to cover much of central and northern Europe as the weekend continues. Temperatures will remain cold through this weekend, with a freezing line dropping to 500m on Sunday and, as a result temperatures of -10°C being the norm at 2,000m.
Snow will first arrive in flurries on Saturday, but, in the west of the country, it is Sunday where things really shift through the gears. At least a foot of snow is expected down at Zermatt, initially over higher ground only thanks to a rare uptick in the freezing line, but eventually reaching all elevations as the freezing line falls away, continuing on into Monday when an additional 20cmcan be expected.
In the east of the region, things will turn slightly bonkers. This same Sunday snowfall falls as half-a-metre in most places and, instead of drying up as the new week begins, it will continue to fall across Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Christmas day), too. A further 45cm can be expected down on Monday and another 30cm on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Expect the avalanche risk to tick up to High or Very High (4 or 5) over the coming days as a result. Unfortunately whiterisk.ch don’t forecast in advance like the French do, so it is difficult to ascertain with any certainty what it might do. Please check your local forecasts carefully using the links below and plan any backcountry and off piste travel carefully in the coming days.

I began skiing at school in Australia. I qualified as a BASI instructor in 2011 and a SCBB rep in 2015. I have skied extensively throughout France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and North America, along with dozens of Japanese resorts. I love seeing the whiteness of the snow against the blue sky and the green trees and spreading the fun of being outdoors in that rugged environment. In my other time I am a surfer and ocean swimmer. I have also worked as a Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases and Gastroenterology. I live in Perth, Australia.
Following a childhood skiing in Scotland I spent 5 winters working as a Ski Guide / Holiday Rep across the French Alps. My aim then, as is now, was that whatever the members skiing ability, snow conditions or weather were I tried to create a fun day. On returning to Blighty I worked as a District nurse, but ski adventures continued with family holidays venturing as far as the USA and Canada. Now retired I relish even more ski trips alongside meeting new people, and when not doing so I enjoy a very active life in the great outdoors
We are still early in the process of assigning Reps for the 2024/25 winter season. Thank you for your patience whilst we make these arrangements.
Life long outdoors enthusiast. Telemarker and keen road cyclist. Exploration Geophysicist for over 30 years having worked in a number of locations globally. Just enjoy sharing the mountains with like minded folk.
I started skiing in my home country of Scotland when I was at school, now I spend most of the winter in the alps. As well as repping for the SCGB, I lead for the DHO and am a BASI and IASI instructor. The most important things for me on a leading day are safety, smiles and miles. I always enjoy driving to the resorts from Scotland as a grand touring road trip. The rest of my year is involved in clay target shooting, for the last 17 years I've been capped for Scotland in the Home International.
I enjoy every aspect and style of downhill skiing - from cruisey blues through thigh-burning reds and jaw-dropping blacks to heart-pumping moguls and waist-burying powder (when available). But, more than anything else, skiing is for me a social sport so there is nothing I like more than making new friends and enjoying convivial company while finding new places to ski and new routes to travel between picturesque chocolate stops and wonderful mountain restaurants. This year I am looking forward to skiing some new resorts, meeting more friends and helping Ski Club members experience my favourite activities. When I am not dreaming about, or planning, my next ski trip I live in the quiet Hampshire downlands, keeping fit for next season swimming, cycling, walking and playing the occasional game of tennis.
I was first stuck on skis in the days of lace up leather boots and horrid leather safety straps which was not a total success but when I returned to the slopes as a teenager I was hooked. I am a real powder bunny, never happier than when playing in the soft stuff and am happy to don skins in search of virgin tracks. When not skiing I enjoy cycling (on and off road) and most other outdoor pursuits particularly wet ones!
