Although Wengen is famous for the fearsome Lauberhorn Downhill course – the longest and one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit – its slopes are best suited to intermediates.
The village was a farming community long before skiing arrived; it is still tiny, but dominated by sizeable hotels, mostly of Victorian origin. So it is not exactly chocolate-box pretty, but it is charming and relaxed, and almost traffic-free. The short main street is the hub. Lined with chalet-style shops and hotels, it also has the ice rink and village nursery slopes right next to it.
Wengen is an attractive and reassuring village for families. The nursery slope is in the centre and the Playhouse kindergarten is in the tourist office nearby. There’s loads to do off the slopes, in including tobogganing, curling, ice skating, swimming and winter walking.
If you’re used to raving in Kitzbühel or Val Thorens, Wengen is quiet on the après scene, especially for young people. But a number of bars are still popular at the end of the day, including the Pickel Bar, the ‘cosy’ bar of the Silberhorn Hotel, the traditional Tanne and the ‘lively’ Rocks Bar, with plasma screens showing Sky Sports.
On the mountain, the outdoor Läger Bar, next to the Männlichen chair, is good for sitting in a deckchair in the sun. Tipirama (a wigwam at Kleine Scheidegg) is a fun place immediately after skiing ‘if not too cold’, sometimes with DJs and live bands. The Wäsch bar at the Bumps section of the home run is a popular final-run stop-off.
Wengen’s enviable location on the northern side of the Swiss Alps makes it a dream to get to. The best way is to use Switzerland’s quick, clean and efficient railway network to deliver you directly from the airport to the heart of the resort. Journey times from Zurich Airport take around three hours, or from Geneva Airport four. If you are on a transfer or driving yourself, note that Wengen is mostly car free; vehicles stop in the valley at Lauterbrunnen, from where you hop on the train for the short but sharp climb up the side of the valley to Wengen.
Each area in the Jungfrau region, including the separate Grindelwald areas, employ separate opening and closing dates:
Individual area tickets are no longer available – instead, one lift pass now covers all Jungfrau resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren

Totals expected for this weekend across Switzerland have been increased slightly from previous predictions, and additionally we should now see steady snowfall throughout this weekend and the start of the new week instead, albeit across higher elevations only.
A series of low pressure systems come barrelling in off the Atlantic, bringing unsettled conditions and cold weather to much of the continent and British Isles. The first of these skirts over the top of the Alps over the weekend, before two more move in at the start of next week. Temperatures will start the weekend bitterly cold, with -15°C at 2,000m possible and probable. Around 10cm is expected over this weekend, rising to 20cm in the East of the country, falling mostly at higher elevations as the freezing line climbs quickly from sea level to around 2,000m.
The second system will move in on Monday afternoon, bringing much the same result albeit with higher totals. Beginning in the West on Monday afternoon, up to 50cm could fall overnight Monday to Tuesday, dropping to around a foot by the time this reaches the eastern part of the country. This will be limited to higher elevations as, whilst the freezing line does drop momentarily, it will remain camped out at 2,000m throughout this period.
Finally, the third system will hit westerly resorts on Wednesday, with about a foot expected down. A few floccons will fall in the east, but unsettled conditions will continue throughout the week across the country.

Following a childhood skiing in Scotland I spent 5 winters working as a Ski Guide / Holiday Rep across the French Alps. My aim then, as is now, was that whatever the members skiing ability, snow conditions or weather were I tried to create a fun day. On returning to Blighty I worked as a District nurse, but ski adventures continued with family holidays venturing as far as the USA and Canada. Now retired I relish even more ski trips alongside meeting new people, and when not doing so I enjoy a very active life in the great outdoors
We are still in the process of assigning Reps for the 2024/25 winter season. Thank you for your patience whilst we make these arrangements.
Life long outdoors enthusiast. Telemarker and keen road cyclist. Exploration Geophysicist for over 30 years having worked in a number of locations globally. Just enjoy sharing the mountains with like minded folk.
I started skiing in my home country of Scotland when I was at school, now I spend most of the winter in the alps. As well as repping for the SCGB, I lead for the DHO and am a BASI and IASI instructor. The most important things for me on a leading day are safety, smiles and miles. I always enjoy driving to the resorts from Scotland as a grand touring road trip. The rest of my year is involved in clay target shooting, for the last 17 years I've been capped for Scotland in the Home International.
I enjoy every aspect and style of downhill skiing - from cruisey blues through thigh-burning reds and jaw-dropping blacks to heart-pumping moguls and waist-burying powder (when available). But, more than anything else, skiing is for me a social sport so there is nothing I like more than making new friends and enjoying convivial company while finding new places to ski and new routes to travel between picturesque chocolate stops and wonderful mountain restaurants. This year I am looking forward to skiing some new resorts, meeting more friends and helping Ski Club members experience my favourite activities. When I am not dreaming about, or planning, my next ski trip I live in the quiet Hampshire downlands, keeping fit for next season swimming, cycling, walking and playing the occasional game of tennis.
I was first stuck on skis in the days of lace up leather boots and horrid leather safety straps which was not a total success but when I returned to the slopes as a teenager I was hooked. I am a real powder bunny, never happier than when playing in the soft stuff and am happy to don skins in search of virgin tracks. When not skiing I enjoy cycling (on and off road) and most other outdoor pursuits particularly wet ones!
