  • Zermatt offers some of the most impressive skiing in the world, stretching from 1,620m to a lofty 3,889m – all set against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Matterhorn.

360km of slopes provide some of the most extensive intermediate and advanced terrain in Europe, and this is before you even take into account the off piste options. Skiing takes place in four main sectors – Rothorn, Gornergrat, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and across the Italian border in Cervinia – all of which are connected by a fantastic lift system. Zermatt is one of the few European resorts to feature skiing 365 days a year, based on the impressive Theodul glacier. Note that access is also available on the Italian side from Cervinia.

The Ski Club’s Representative (Rep) Service will operate in resort, featuring two Reps. They’ll begin the season in early December and will be there until early April. Our Zermatt Facebook Group is incredibly active, with regular meet ups (both on and off snow!) planned by the 350+ members of the online Ski Club community. Our Zermatt group on the Ski Club App is your new home for the 2023/24 season, with regular updates and conversations from your Ski Club Reps and members in resort! There are four Freshtracks holidays visiting the resort this season, including the ever-popular Ski and Schnapps Peak Experience trips, a late-season powder adventure and a telemark weekend in April.

    Pros and cons

    • Huge, snowsure ski area that straddles the Italian border
    • An excellent lift system with few queues
    • Spectacular high mountain scenery and views of the iconic Matterhorn
    • Charming village with a real buzz about it
    • Loads of terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers
    • World renowned mountain restaurants and hospitality on both the Swiss and the Italian sides of the border
    • Great winter walking for non-skiers
    • Child friendly – children up to 9 ski free and it’s up to 16 on Saturdays
    • Not ideal for beginners – although there are good downloading options from novice areas
    • Upper lifts can close during bad weather or in high winds – in particular the crossing to Italy
    • The exchange rate has pushed up the cost in Switzerland overall

    On the Slopes

The four main sectors all offer something different and are large enough in their own right to keep anyone happy. Snow reliability is fantastic – you can ski here 365 days a year – and the areas all link up quickly thanks to the slick lift system. The only issues are a lack of real beginner zones and steep resort runs, but take these away and you’re left with an incredibly varied paradise for intermediates upwards.

    For Beginners

The main beginner area (with magic carpets and rope tows) is at Leisee, just below Sunnegga. There’s special pass to get you to and from that area and allow you to ski the blue run down to Findeln, but other than that progression to longer runs is difficult and the slopes are challenging for near-beginners.

Easier blue runs can be found in the Riffelberg area connecting with the Gifthittli chair.  Skiers can return to the village on the train from this area.

    For Intermediates

Where to start? The choice is almost limitless, with 295km of blues and reds Zermatt is one big playground for intermediates. Head to the snowsure runs on the glacier on a sunny day and drop over into Italy to Cervinia, where the rolling terrain is perfect cruising territory. Long reds can also be found by the Hirli chairlift and you can rack up over 1,000m of on-piste vertical from both the Rothorn and Hohtälli cable cars on runs that are often very quiet.

    For Advanced/Expert & Off Piste

There is some great off piste when conditions are right, and the off piste itineraries include some excellent runs. The high altitude preserves the snow well, especially on the north-facing slopes, but much of the terrain is very rocky so a lot of the best itineraries need a few months of snow to fill in each winter. Ask your rep about hiring a mountain guide.  The Skiguide Zermatt app (which is excellent) shows which itinerary runs are open as well as the status of the lifts and pistes.

    In the Resort

The resort is a mixture of ancient chalets and barns, grand 19th-century hotels and modern buildings, most in a traditional style. The oldest, most charming part of the village has narrow lanes and old wooden barns with slate roofs, but the resort now stretches a long way down the valley. It can feel busy, especially on the main street, but there is always a real buzz about the place – just watch out for the electric taxis that nip around the town.

    For Families

The cost, the general inconvenience of the place and the challenges facing beginners and near-beginners make for what is not an ideal family destination.
There are lots of facilities for younger children in town, but to get the best out of the resort, we’d recommend coming when the kids are a bit older so they can really make the most of the vast ski area.

    For Après

There’s a good mix of sophisticated and informal fun, though it definitely helps if you have deep pockets. There are lively places on the mountain including Hennu Stall and Cervo at the base of the return run from Sunnegga.
Back in town you can’t beat the Ski Club’s social hour at the Hotel Pollux bar – get there early to get a good seat and keep your dinner plans flexible as the hour has been known to extend to several…

    Getting to Zermatt

    • Zürich airport: 3.5 hours
    • Basel airport: 3.5 hours
    • Geneva airport: 4 hours
    • Calais: approximately 11 hours driving (571 miles)

Zermatt is located right at the end a deep alpine valley and cars are only allowed past Täsch if you’re a resident – a Park+Ride service is offered Taesch station with trains, buses and taxis available. The best way to get there is via the train – it is just under four hours from Geneva and around three and a half from both Zürich and Basel; all routes require a change at Visp for the local service up the valley, via the Park+Ride station at Täsch, to Zermatt station which is located in the heart of the village.

Plan your journey online via the SBB Railways website.

    Lift Pass Prices

There are two rates available, a Zermatt-only pass and a pass covering the whole Internartional Ski Area including Zermatt, Cervinia, Valtourneche, and others. Children up to 9 years old ski for free.

    Who will be your rep?

Your Ski Club Reps are in resort for one reason only; to help you discover better skiing. They are your personal resort gurus, with years of experience skiing here and around the world, who will bring you and your fellow Members together to conquer the mountain! Stay up to date with everything in resort, find the best spots for an après beer, and ski to your heart’s content.

Please note that two Reps reps are in resort at the same, time, accommodating for the large community we have in Zermatt – you may notice only one Rep listed for certain periods below, as we wait to confirm the second Rep for these slots.

Our Reps will be in resort between 14 December 2024 and 4 April 2025, skiing six days a week – Reps’ day off/changeover day is Saturday in this resort. We are making changes to how registration to ski with the Club in resort works. Thank you for your patience whilst we undertake these updates to the registration process.

I first skied at Glenshee on a fine Scottish winter's day in 1982 and was immediately hooked. Luckily for me, during the early eighties I lived in Rome and spent many happy weekends skiing with friends in the easily accessible resorts of the Abruzzi mountains. I love Italian style, culture and language and travel there as often as I can. I have also been fortunate to live overseas in India and Egypt. For most of my career I worked as a government press officer, first at the Scottish Office and then at Energy and Trade and Industry. I am relatively new to the Ski Club of Great Britain having joined through Mountain Tracks, my favourite ski touring holiday company. I am very much looking forward to skiing with many of you over the coming seasons.

I started sliding down the Cairngorm mountain at school. I loved the famous "White Lady" moguls. Changed from skis to board in the "90's" and back to skis in the "2000's". I enjoy planning ski days taking in great coffee and lunch spots. I have been known for dad dancing in ski boots!

My favourite resorts are Mayrhofen, Galtur, Obergurgl, Saalbach and Zermatt

Away from skiing I like travelling, mountain biking and swing a golf club very badly

Ski Club rep since 2017.  I enjoy nearly all types of skiing - off and on piste, including recently amateur ski racing which is a blast. Ski touring currently not my main interest, unless to access great snow, or I’m feeling like a long walk on skis, which is rare! Other than Europe, and a little in Canada, have skied a few times in South America, which is epic, and the wine’s not too bad either.  Enjoy many other sports from windsurfing to motorbikes and clay shooting, all of which I do equally badly. Look forward to skiing with you hopefully on a bluebird, powder day.

I completed the repping course in December 2022 having been a ski club member for around 10 years, mainly skiing in Val d'isere where I've skied with some really great people and made some good friends.I started skiing in 1986/7 when I did a season in Val d'isere working in Dicks T Bar having never skied before I turned up looking for a job followed by a season in Meribel for a tour company. I've been lucky to have skied in many resorts around Europe including Val d'isere, 3 valleys, Zermatt and La Grave being some of my favourites and are looking forward to skiing with ski club members in some new resorts. In the early 2000s me and my wife Kathryn worked for Silver Ski for 2 seasons running a chalet without ending in divorce. To keep fit I enjoy cycling both road and mountain and playing golf and walking with my cocker spaniel in and around the North Yorkshire dales and moors close to where I live.

I love being in the mountains, the skiing, the scenery, the light.,the atmosphere and ambiance of alpine villages. Skiing is such a fantastic sport, exhilarating and exciting and yet sociable. It can be challenging, pushing yourself to tackle that gnarly couloir, or maybe taking it easy just cruising , enjoying the view and thinking about that lovely lunch spot. My skiing experience is enhanced by sharing with like minded and passionate Ski club members.
For many years I was a ski club member before I became a leader. I really get a kick out of meeting new people and old friends and sharing the fun. My favourite resort is Zermatt. It has everything, the only downside being the expense. Outside of skiing I enjoy photography, golf , dancing, classic cars and motorbikes. For a crust I run a residential property company. I really look forward to meeting you on the slopes.

I learnt to ski whilst at university with the OTC and still remember the buzz of learning the most amazing sport, which has become a major passion in my life.  I did my instructor’s course in the Army and also a few winters in Norway learning military skiing and arctic survival. Since leaving, I’ve done my Canadian Alpine Level 2 and am currently training for BASI Level 3. I’ve also surprised myself by instructing on school ski trips in Italy, Switzerland and Austria and actually enjoying it!

I love skiing on piste or off piste - it’s a particular thrill to ski the whole mountain and be able to get away from the herd. In the ski season I’m based near Morzine and also for some of the summer, when I’m still daft enough to mountain bike.

It’s a joy for me to share my passion for skiing with others and I love meeting new people. I’m looking forward to skiing with you.

I have been skiing for over 40 years and still enjoying this marvellous Alpine Sport. I have skied in various places over the world from Obertsdorf and Garmisch in Bavaria to the Monashees in BC Canada. As a PhysEd graduate and a former member of HM Forces I have enjoyed instructing, guiding and participating in alpine racing when I was a good deal younger and some ski touring in Norway which involved a night's snow-holing!! I enjoy the mountains and the ski resort atmosphere and look forward to the 2023 season. I will be repping in Zermatt 14-29 Jan 23 with Dave Davenport. We both look forward to meeting and skiing with Ski Club members in resort.

Skiing has been my passion since being introduced to the sport in Andermatt at the age of 3. I have been a Ski Club "rep" since the 70's skiing in so many different places both as a Freshtracks and a resort rep. I love skiing off-piste when I can but just being on snow with others who enjoy the mountains, preferably in the sun, is fine by me. After skiing I head back to a fairly busy retired life on the Isle of Arran

He enjoys both Alpine and Telemark skiing as well as snowboarding including participating in ski racing, snowboard freestyle and ski touring. However he especially looks forward to skiing alongside SCGB members due to the shared passion and common determination to have a great time!

Doesn't look like it's ever going to snow in Bondi where I live and my skis are useless on sand and surf so I best keep coming back to Europe as there is nothing I enjoy more than skiing! I joined the club on a ski & spa Freshtracks holiday in Kitzbuhel in 2004 and boy am I glad I did. I have done some amazing skiing in spectacular places with so many great members over the years and am truly delighted to be able to return the favour and now lead members on Freshtracks holidays and resorts. I've enjoyed skiing in many resorts around the world and you will find me heading to Zermatt at every opportunity, ideally heli-skiing followed by a gourmet chow-down, laughing about the adventures just had in good company. Looking forward to skiing with you and having fun.

Having wandered the world with a backpack for several years in my 20's, I found myself staying with friends in the French Alps one winter with nothing much planned and simply fell in love with everything about the skiing lifestyle. Doing everything I could to prolong the visit, including washing thousands of pans, shovelling tonnes of snow and living in a broom cupboard! I realised I was hooked.

Alas, real life intervened and back to Blighty to pursue a career in IT, with skiing trips a much longed-for highlight. A lovely Freshtracks week with an awesome Ski Club Rep and local guide persuaded me to have a go at the Rep. course myself and, well, here I am! I am keen on most mountain sports, but apart from skiing I love to hike, canoe, paraglide, climb Via Ferrata, and ride my bikes - both pedal and powered.
