    Overview

A place where tradition, hospitality and fine local cuisine is a way of life – and fantastic skiing lasts all year long

Before we count the lifts (speedy, modern and 180 of them spanning four ski areas) and before we measure the slopes (enough for a week, month, a winter full of skiing across 535 km of pistes), let’s consider the authentic charm and commitment to quality the Zillertal Valley offers. Surrounded by sparkling Three Thousanders, this sunny wide valley in Tirol is dotted with hotels, inns and chalets whose chief aim is to pamper their guests. Notably, there’s scarcely a chain to be seen for miles; the hotels of Zillertal are all owner-operated and often run by the same family for generations. And that’s the way we like it.

The premium choice for winter sports lovers and foodies alike, Zillertal specialises in high quality restaurants with many ingredients coming straight from the valley. Organic milk from alpine cows, homemade schnapps and hand-cured meats are only the beginning. From traditional mountain hut fare to sophisticated cocktails, to panorama bars and a vegetarian restaurant with its own permaculture garden, guests will be thrilled to experience a huge variety of restaurants and mountain huts.

There is Gaspi ́s in the heart of Gerlos with a beechwood barbecue, or GuatzEssen where dishes are made by hand from the products of the local forests — dining in the villages of Zillertal is sure to please. Likewise, the mountain restaurants provide even more chances to stop and soak in the Alpine atmosphere. The sun terrace at the Mountain Loft at the Spieljochbahn cable car station is sure to be a popular stop. So too, the Kreuzjoch Hütte promises authentic Tirolean coziness, hearty cooking and an incomparable view over the Zillertal. We invite you to experience the local gastronomy from peak to valley, including the exciting reinterpretation of Zillertal traditions by the young chefs cooking in new and contemporary ways.

    Ski Area

Located about 40 km east of Innsbruck, the Ziller Valley is dotted with lovely villages that include Gerlos, Mayrhofen, Fügen, Tux and Zell am Ziller. Alongside tradition, hospitality and state-of-the-art ski lifts, the Zillertaler Superskipass also comes with a skiing guarantee 365 days a year at the snowsure Hintertux Glacier. Austria ́s unique ski area features 80 slope-side huts, ready to welcome you at every turn with a cold frothy beer, fragrant apple strudel or a hearty Tiroler Grostl heaped with crispy potato, egg and bacon. Whatever your taste, there’s high-quality Tirolean cuisine on the menu and dramatic views over of the mountains – as well as more than 460 km of beautiful winter hiking trails to work off the calories.

Friendly people, good food and Zillertal beer always make a ski holiday special. And along with the hundreds of kilometres of slopes to explore, the services in Zillertal are devoted to ensuring your time is well spent. Why take the car when there are frequent ski buses? (The lockers at the ski depots couldn’t be more convenient: open and close the locker with your ski pass and pick up your kit the next day, warm and dry.) There are cruisy carving slopes, long sporty valley runs and demanding steeps for experts. Not to mention excellent ski schools to raise your game. By lunchtime, with so many fabulous huts, you’ll find not only warm Tirolean hospitality but also fresh and regional-based products. Naturally, the end of every ski day is when old friends and new get together over a chilled Zillertal beer and maybe even a little boogie too. It’s tradition.

Looking for a perfect photo pitstop? Stop at the new observation deck at Stuanmandl top station. Its perch at 2,300 m offers breath-taking views across the Zillertaler Alps. The top station at Rosenalmbahn is engineered for greater convenience thanks to a new elevator, escalators, ski-depot, loos and even a lovely room for self-catering guests.

Explore the area by taking a tour of one of Zillertal’s special sign-posted ski routes:

The Altitude Guzzler Tour explores the Mayrofen area via the brand new Penkenbahn as well as Austria’s biggest gondola, the Ahornbahn. The distance covered adds up to almost 14,000 m and includes the Harakiri, Austria’s steepest slope. The Arena Champion Tour is fun for the family, passing by numerous photo points, SkiMovie pistes, speed-check slopes, snow parks, plus the longest valley run in Austria starting at the summit of Übergangsjoch. For perfect pistes and excellent food, the Leisure Tour around Hochzillertal-Hochfügen offers a multitude of mountain huts, gourmet restaurants and cozy lounges. The magnificent Glacier Circuit covers a massive 72 km of blue and black runs including the 6km Schwarze Pfanne downhill valley run to Hintertux village.

There are numerous snow parks packed with action, some with special kids’ areas to practice jumps and tricks.

    Eco Credentials

    • Zillertal Arena continues its path towards more sustainable skiing by launching its fourth photovoltaic installation – similar to solar heating. These eco-efforts began back in 2014, when a biomass heat and power station started to produce energy for approximately 130 houses in the village of Gerlos.
    • With power produced by the latest photovoltaic installation, 640,000 skiers can be transported up the mountain CO2-neutral. Beyond the lift’s operating hours, surplus energy will be fed into the electricity grid.
    • Even après-ski is going green here: at the Umbrella Bar in Gerlos, a new cafeteria and restaurant is built to allow heating by solar heat and biomass
