AlpinExpress Pass: Discounts for those traveling by train as part of a sustainable tourism initiative from businesses in Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz
Launched in February 2022, the AlpinExpress Pass has a single focus – reducing the carbon emissions of ski holidays. Spearheaded by Montagne Verte, an environmental nonprofit based in Morzine, the AlpinExpress Pass gives access to local discounts on lift passes, accommodation, transfers, ski hire, ski and snowboard lessons, restaurants, and other experiences across Morzine-Avoriaz, Les Gets, and the Vallée d’Aulps. The total savings mean that a train ticket now becomes a low-carbon but also cheaper way to travel to the Alps.
Sara Burdon, general manager of the association, explains: “Montagne Verte works to reduce the environmental impact of our valley and help local businesses adapt to the changing climate. Rewarding and incentivising tourists to travel to us by train helps preserve our alpine environment as travel to resort is the biggest impact of any ski or mountain holiday. The businesses committing to this discount are sending a clear message to the world: we want you to visit this amazing area, and we want to support you to visit in the most sustainable way possible”.
Greener Ski Holiday
With almost 60% of the emissions of a ski holiday being associated with travel, it is important resorts do what they can to support tourists in greening their travel. Morzine-Avoriaz and Les Gets town halls work hard on their environmental initiatives, putting them at the centre of their plans. The local lift companies have also made huge steps forward in reducing the emissions of their operations, and now also offer a 10% discount on either the Portes du Soleil or the Morzine-Les Gets ski pass
Over 70 business partners are signed up for the pass, with savings to be made on accommodation, passes, ski hire, lessons, food and drink, and other activities such as massages or snowshoeing. Accumulating these discounts can result in a hefty overall discount on your next ski holiday.
Increase in demand for train travel
More and more travellers are considering how best to reach their favourite ski destinations and opting for the train over the plane. Demand for this pass has increased each year, reaching over 450 passes for the 24-25 winter season.
What was new for 2025?
A few more restaurants were added to the AlpinExpress pass, especially up in Avoriaz, but the most exciting change for this winter was the addition of the Portes du Soleil ski pass. With the Avoriaz lift company joining Morzine and Les Gets in supporting the AlpinExpress pass the full area lift pass is now included.
Montagne Verte also added practical guides for ski travel, how to change trains in Paris, and how to get from the final train station up to resort, to make getting the train easier as well as cheaper!
