Having been a Freshtracks holiday regular, I took the plunge in 2013 and did the leaders course, what a fantastic 2 weeks. I have been on the Zell am See holiday with George a few times now. It is a great hotel & location, lots of fun. Courmayeur is another favourite of mine. I have been on numerous family holidays and a few Freshtacks holidays as well. When not on the slopes I work as a freelance sailing instructor based mainly in the Solent.

Joseppe Jenkin

I have been lucky enough to have been skiing from a very early age, coming from good Austrian/Cornish stock; I spent my early winter years on the mountains surrounding Innsbruck learning and perfecting my falling with style technique. Since then I have had a couple of years racing, and qualified as an instructor, while serving in the army. Squeezed in 5 seasons working as an instructor/guide in Kitzbuhel , perfected the game of nails and acquired a taste for schnapps. My passion for skiing and the mountains has never diminished. As a Rep I look forward to sharing this passion and enthusiasm with others who feel the same...

The Skiing in Zell am See-Kaprun is perfect for beginners and intermediates, with some terrain suitable for more advanced skiers.

From the fabulous views in Zell am See, the Maiskogel’s “locals’ hill”, the incredibly snowsure Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun and the vast network of intermediate cruising  in the Ski Circus at Saalbach Hinterglemm, there’s plenty of ski area to explore inside & outside of Zell am See-Kaprun too. It’s no wonder the Ski Club Freshtracks holiday to Zell sells out months in advance and our Ski Club Rep has so many returning Members each season!

Zell am See-Kaprun has a great reputation for its alpine charm with a modern skiing twist. Its location near the picturesque Lake Zell and the historic architecture make it an attractive base and a draw for non-skiers too. The dominating mountain of Schmittenhöhe overlooks the village and offers stunning views of the lake and towering glacial peaks surrounding the area.

If you’re visiting Zell am See-Kaprun this winter you’ll experience a significantly better connected ski area. The 3K-Konnection cable car which opened in December 2019 is 12 kilometres up the mountain from the centre of Kaprun to the summit of Kitzsteinhorn. On top of this the first section of the zellamseeXpress was completed in time for the 2019/20 season and allows skiers to reach the Schmittenhöhe for the first time from Saalbach Hinterglemm.

A unique and picturesque resort nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, Zell am See should be on every traveller’s wish list.

Pros and cons

  • Varied, wooded slopes with beautiful views down to the lake
  • Impressive lift system with more to come
  • Pretty town and loads to do off the slopes
  • Snowsure glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn is included
  • Snow can suffer due to sun and low altitude, but snowmaking helps
  • Local slopes limited so need to travel to other areas
  • Few challenges for advanced/expert skiers
  • Can be morning queues for lifts

Sporthotel Alpin

At the end of each day, ski straight back to the Sporthotel Alpin 4*, conveniently located at the foot of the slopes and a three minute stroll to the resort centre. You’ll be on a half board basis for the duration of your stay, with dinner served at a local restaurant, Kraftwerk, just a short two minute walk from the hotel. The hotel was renovated in 2016, with all rooms now offering a balcony and seating area along with free wifi. The spa facilities include an indoor pool, two saunas and a steam room. This holiday is on a single occupancy basis. If you would prefer to share a room with someone you know, then please contact the Freshtracks office and we will make the relevant arrangements.
