Just seems like yesterday but it was 20 years ago I started repping for the Ski Club. So many wonderful memories. I am fortunate to ski for a fair amount each winter, pretty much always in Zermatt and Obergurgl and a few different resorts each season. As much as I love skiing, I do like to combine with stops at great mountain restaurants. Rest assured there is always time for a coffee and cake stop, especially when as wonderful as the attached photo.

I have enjoyed repping for the Ski Club ever since completing the Reps course back in 1975! My favourite ski areas are Zermatt, Davos, Wengen, and the Dolomites, where the skiing and scenery are hard to beat. US resorts of Vail, Aspen, Steamboat, and Lake Tahoe, are also spectacular. I enjoy trying out new ski equipment, and sharing a wonderful 'ski experience' with other members, and my ski motto is 'Keep on improving and have a ball!'

Other interests include Motor Sport, Cycling, Reading & Music, and...country walking with my faithful Labrador! Have a great season. Cheers.

It has been a privilege to be a Leader for 25 years, and ski with such a variety of members. My favourite resort is Zermatt, and I enjoy any winter sports.

I have skied since I was 9 years old when my family took us and cousins for two weeks to Ischgl. I was hooked! I have been a Ski Club of Great Britain rep since 1987. I have a lovely family with two boys. My wife Kersti is also a Ski Club rep. Most of my skiing is in the Alps, though I have been across the atlantic a couple of times to ski. I love a good lunch as much as piste and powder. For me it's the whole experience in the mountains!

  • Zermatt offers some of the most impressive skiing in the world, stretching from 1,620m to a lofty 3,889m – all set against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Matterhorn.

360km of slopes provide some of the most extensive intermediate and advanced terrain in Europe, and this is before you even take into account the off piste options. Skiing takes place in four main sectors – Rothorn, Gornergrat, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and across the Italian border in Cervinia – all of which are connected by a fantastic lift system. Zermatt is one of the few European resorts to feature skiing 365 days a year, based on the impressive Theodul glacier. Note that access is also available on the Italian side from Cervinia.

The Ski Club’s Representative (Rep) Service will operate in resort, featuring two Reps. They’ll begin the season in early December and will be there until early April. Our Zermatt Facebook Group is incredibly active, with regular meet ups (both on and off snow!) planned by the 350+ members of the online Ski Club community. Our Zermatt group on the Ski Club App is your new home for the 2023/24 season, with regular updates and conversations from your Ski Club Reps and members in resort! There are four Freshtracks holidays visiting the resort this season, including the ever-popular Ski and Schnapps Peak Experience trips, a late-season powder adventure and a telemark weekend in April.

Zermatt boasts 360 km of outstanding terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers, as well as an abundance of interconnected blue and red runs, all set against breathtaking mountain scenery unlike any other.

    Pros and cons

    • Huge, snowsure ski area that straddles the Italian border
    • An excellent lift system with few queues
    • Spectacular high mountain scenery and views of the iconic Matterhorn
    • Charming village with a real buzz about it
    • Loads of terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers
    • World renowned mountain restaurants and hospitality on both the Swiss and the Italian sides of the border
    • Great winter walking for non-skiers
    • Child friendly – children up to 9 ski free and it’s up to 16 on Saturdays
    • Not ideal for beginners – although there are good downloading options from novice areas
    • Upper lifts can close during bad weather or in high winds – in particular the crossing to Italy
    • The exchange rate has pushed up the cost in Switzerland overall

    Hotel Sonne

You will be staying in the warm and sophisticated 4* Hotel Sonne on a half board basis, home to a fantastic wellness spa area and leisure facilities. The hotel has magnificent views of the Matterhorn that can be seen from the balconies in each room. A mix of traditional Swiss and more international food is served in the traditional wood panelled restaurant each day, whilst the bar provides a sophisticated setting to unwind after a day on the slopes.

    Rep Review – January 2024

    Alastair Ross, July 3, 2024

A long standing holiday in the Freshtracks January calendar for good reason, with many members returning each year. The skiing is wonderful and made even better with the fantastic scenery of the Matterhorn. Rest assured there will be plenty of time for photo stops. Zermatt is as famous for its lunch and apres stops and we aim to make the most of the opportunity. To cap it all we stay in the extremely comfortable family run Hotel Sonne, complete with a wonderful pool and spa area. In addition, weather permitting, we spend a couple of days over in Italy, enjoying the super long intermediate runs to Cervinia and Valtournenche and of course include a cappuccino/hot chocolate stop and a pizza/pasta lunch.
