A gondola from the edge of town and a fast chairlift whisk you rapidly up into the heart of the Three Valleys ski area.
It is worth staying local however for the long, cruisey blue runs, especially if you’re here during holiday season as this is one of the quieter sections of the Three Valleys. The lifts take you to the top of Tougnete, from which you can either drop in Meribel and head towards Courchevel or stick in the Belleville Valley and ski towards Les Menuires.
Unusually for the region, St Martin retains a rustic charm that you certainly don’t get further up the valley in Val Thorens. The village centre remains small, with the church acting as a focal point. Fortunately, the main road up the valley bypasses the village, meaning it is nice and quiet and safer for families. There’s traditional chalet-style accommodation and a couple of hotels, all of which will be notably cheaper than further up the valley. As a result of its lower altitude, access from Geneva is a little quicker, but the transfer still takes over 2 hours.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, St Martin de Belleville – as part of the wider Belleville commune including Val Thorens and Les Menuires – has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.
- St Martin and the Belleville valley was first accredited in 2022
- The ecological governance of the resort drew particular attention, including preserving several rare natural habitats
- A comprehensive package of support is in place to support diversification of the local economy

The weekend opens partial sunny across France, but temperatures drop and conditions turn more unsettled as a large low pressure area follows Storm Eowyn across the northwest corner of Ireland and the United Kingdom. This will bring excellent snowfall across the French Alps for most of Sunday and the new week.
Starting Sunday, at least 15cm is expected down across higher ground every day until at least Wednesday, the end of our forecasting period. THis will spike to a foot down each of Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the freezing line drops from its current norm of around 2,000m to 1,000m on Monday, ensuring this snow will reach all elevations.
Expect the avalanche forecast to tick up over the coming days – this new snowfall is falling on a persistent weak layer, on a relatively smooth bed surface after a consistent period without fresh snowfall; the high quantities of new snowfall will elevate the risk from these factors across the mountain. Please check your local avalanche forecast and plan all off piste and backcountry travel carefully.
